MORE than a hundred Afghan police are charged each week with criminal offences.'That must be WRONG'

MORE than a hundred Afghan police are charged each week with criminal offences - highlighting the mammoth task that the international mission faces in readying them to assume security control of their country.

The figures, leaked to The Times, show that one in 25 members of the 150,000 force was arrested last year for crimes including murder, theft, corruption and helping prisoners to escape. Crime within the force has been well publicised, but this is the first time that detailed statistics have been released - and they make bleak reading, given the multibillion-dollar sums spent training the force since 2001.
