A rebellion against the Nazi occupiers of Poland's capital city happened
on August 1, 1944. The Polish underground army (AK, Home Army) started
the operation to liberate the city from the invaders and enable them to
act as hosts to the approaching Red Army. The operation which was to
last an incredible 63 days, cost the AK around 6,000 lives with some
50,000 wounded. The Red Army stopped its offensive just miles outside
the city just to let the Poles and Germans fight it out amongst
themselves hoping no doubt that the Germans would annihilate the
anti-communist Polish Home Army, thus saving the lives of many Russian
soldiers. The AK, under the direction of Polish General 'Bor'
Komorowski, was forced to capitulate on October 2.
Mix of German, Polish and Russian rarely seen footage.
