September 5 - A dog with a cancerous tumor was taken away from her home in Live Oak after officials said she was being mistreated. Tyra, a boxer, was removed from her home by animal control officers. Tyra has cancer, but animal control says that's not why she was removed.
Live Oak officials said the tumor on Tyra's stomach was open, and maggots were found inside. She also has heartworms and a bad flea problem. Tyra's owner, Norma Garza, her owner says she was not mistreating her animal, and Tyra is like part of the family.
Garza said she never saw the maggots, and Tyra didn't seem like she was sick. It's now up to a judge to decide if Garza will get Tyra back. A hearing is set for later this month. Garza told News 4 WOAI two previous hearings were canceled.
Investigators said there was a conflict on another case they were working. So, they had to reschedule.
