6 US troops killed in Afghan blasts

Monday, 6 July 2009

The US military says six of its troops have been killed in two separate bomb blasts in Afghanistan, amid a spate of insurgent activity across the country.

It says four of the soldiers were killed in the northern town of Kunduz, Two others died in the south, but the US military gave no further details.

Separately, at least two people died in a suicide bombing near a Nato base in Kandahar, southern Afghanistan.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Kunduz and Kandahar attacks.

In another development, Canada's military said on Sunday that a Canadian soldier injured in Afghanistan last month had died.

The latest insurgent attacks came as thousands of US and UK forces continued with a major offensive against the Taliban in the southern Helmand province - the stronghold of the militants.

'US convoy'

In Kunduz, the four American soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb.

They victims were involved in the training of the Afghan security forces, the US military said. It gave no other details.

Local Afghan officials in Kunduz earlier said the attack targeted a convoy of US soldiers.

They said two Afghan civilians were also killed.

Separately, the US military said that two other American soldiers were killed in the south.

Some reports suggest the attack took place in Zabul, north of Kandahar.

All the six US soldiers were serving in the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf).

In the earlier suicide bombing Kandahar, at least two people were killed and many others wounded, officials say.

The attacker blew up his minivan near Kandahar airfield - a major Nato base in the region. No foreign soldiers are reported to have been injured in the attack.

  • Is policing the streets over there so people there can vote in August really worth dying over? How are their deaths keeping AMERICANS safe? The Taliban poses no threat here on our soil at all. If anything, give them money so they can train police there to combat their own problems. We cannot sustain protection there indefinitely just like we couldn't in Iraq. Are we going to spend another 7 years there to protect them?

    Who's next after this?

7 US troops killed throughout Afghanistan... Bombs and bullets killed seven American troops on Monday, the deadliest day for U.S. forces in Afghanistan in nearly a year %u2014 and a sign that the war being fought in the Taliban heartland of the south and east could now be expanding north.

Separately, Taliban militants claimed on a militant Web site that they were holding an American soldier whom the U.S. military says insurgents might have captured last More..

    • Heavy combat this summer with serious casualities on all sides. Then when winter sets in; an intense effort to split off elements of the Taliban with local peace deals. The Marines are staying in the villages and will try and protect the population. Less reliance on firepower after the summer campaign is over. Pakistan must contimue their offense in the tribal region. If everything goes as planned-we could be at a tipping point. I have a good feeling about the new strategy. We'll see.

I'll just make a note ... I don't fully remember the conflict from the 80s (I was born in 1979.), so it's just vague glimpses for me. But my father does and he told me few days ago that this reminds him of mid 80s and numerous Soviet operations and Mujahideen/Al-Qaida/Pakistani counter-of More..

    • if intuition tells us anything at all: more airstrikes killing both civilian and combatant alike. and, thusly, more enemies of the future for America

same as when the war started, same as now, same as tomorrow until coalition troops discontinue violating the national sovereignty of other nations and westernized nations begin relying on intelligence ops, and SPECIFIC TARGETS (as opposed to entire nations), again

      those aren't the 9/11 attackers...
