Originally broadcast from 1971 to 1973, 3 seasons 50 episodes. Inspired by the 1970 made for TV movie "The Young Country". Riding on the success of movies like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Ben Murphy even looks like Paul Newman. The names Smith and Jones originate from a comment in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid when the characters are outside a bank and Sundance says "I'm Smith and you're Jones".
This is a 1972 intro with Ben Murphy and Roger Davis. Star Pete Duel committed suicide on Dec 31, 1971 of a self inflicted gunshot, he was 31 yrs old. Roger Davis took over for him. This show and Bonanza both aired their last episodes in January 1973, leaving only two other westerns, Gunsmoke and Dusty's Trail as the only westerns planned for the fall broadcast season. Westerns had mostly given way to police dramas.

I slept through the 70s, so I missed this — fortunately.

I Was dead in the 70's so I missed it then. But I've seen a few in the last couple years. Not bad.

Looked it up. Looks decent actually thanks for the lead I like sketch shows. Turns out their name was a parody of Alias Smith and Jones.

I enjoyed this show as a teenager. They were cool. Wonder if I'd like it as an adult?

Depends on the person. Some shows translate well as you grow older. Other shows, it's probably best to just remember how much you liked it.
It really depends on your own personal experience. For some reason I can't abide the A-Team as an adult. When I was a kid I loved it. I still love to think about how much I loved the show as a kid. Waiting for my dad to ask me if I'm ready for him to throw in a recording of it. I still like the theme song and the nostalgia it brings. I even chuckl More..
