A Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy has been accused of aggravated rape of a 6-year-old child and fired, Sheriff Craig Webre said in a news release today.

David Lewellen, 33, Thibodaux, is being held at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center following an investigation that began Friday.

A teacher at the child’s school reported the case to police after hearing about alleged sexual contact from the child. The investigation led to Lewellen’s arrest Tuesday night.

Lewellen had been assigned at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center. His employment with the Sheriff’s Office was officially ended with his arrest. If convicted of the aggravated rape charge, Lewellen faces a sentence of life in prison.

Judge Jerome Barbera just set bond at $250,000.
