Quoted comment by 47: What if a person believes in reason and has faith
That person is probably likely to explain why he has faith... Even if the explanation is likely more built on wishful thinking or spiritual guidance than reason. :)
Quoted comment by 47: What if a person believes in reason and has faith
Well strictly speaking that is a contradiction, since faith is belief in something without empirical proof or logical argument. Faith is belief in something purely based on emotion, and emotion is the opposite of reason. Faith is unreasonable. Religious people are reason'able people when it comes to most things except religion. Im dont mean to be rude but i am.
when satan told jesus to jump off of the building and that God would send angels to catch him up and not let him even dash his foot, jesus reasoned "you shouldn't tempt the lord". just think what it would have done for the situation if, when satan told GW bush to go into iraq, he had done a little reasoning.

Yes but GW Bush found his faith in a bottle of Whiskey.
Faith can be used to justify any action or belief. Reason discerns and asks the question why. If every society relied more on reason than faith, i.e., faith upon leaders and faith of self-conviction, there would be less conflict in this world and more understanding between people and cultures.
1. The belief that something is true, in spite of evidence to the contrary.
2. The proposition that something is true, even if there is no evidence to support it.
3. The idea that something can be made true, merely by wishing it to be so.

Assuming reason will lead to harmony. Mao Ze-Dong reasoned his way to creating an Atheist state that justified the slaughter of Buddhist monks and nuns. Reason also spawned the Christian hunts and crucifictions in Japan during the 19th century. Faith and reason should not be mutually exclusive.

Yes, but if one is to take more import than the other let it be reason.

The fact that mao and stalin killed alot of people is not an argument againt reason, it is an argument againt their chosen morality. This is because reason can not be used to say what should be, only what is. As in reason can not prove what is good, only what is tru. However once you have chosen a morality, reason will help you be consistent in your morality. All that aside most people think the golden rule is a good moral principle. (Do unto others as you would have them do unto you). I do think it is easier to stick to a rule (moral or otherwize) if you are rational than rather than emotional or faith based. (The problem with god based morals is that you dont do what is right because it is right but to please "god". If "god" tells you to do something bad you will do it just as blindly, take the martyrs for example. Well thats my 2 cents worth..
Great post! One important thing many people seem to forget is that faith (not religion) is compatible with reason. In fact I think most scientists are moore spiritual than the majority of people who call themselves religious. To uncover real truth and see the benefits from it, opens the mind to philosophical questions and wondering about our existence. Various religios institutions is however not arenas for such revelations, but mindcontroll and isolation of reasonable thinking. Reason and science are suffering greatly because of how the WASPs have ruled US.

I personally believe reason is more important than faith.
