3 killed, kids hurt as fury grows over US drone strikes in Pakistan
Part of channel(s): Afghanistan (current event)

An official with the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, not authorized to speak on the record, condemned today's attack. Previously, the ministry has said it lodged a complaint with the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad about drone strikes in Pakistani territory on October 10 and 11. The ministry called those "a clear violation of international law and Pakistan’s sovereignty."

[Posted 8:03 a.m.] Missiles blew up part of a compound Wednesday in northwest Pakistan, killing three people - including one woman - a government official said.

The latest suspected U.S. drone strike also injured two children, military officers said.

Militants lived in the compound, but so did civilians, the officers said.

There's growing fury over the U.S. pounding of areas known to be home to al Qaeda operatives, mainly in tribal zones along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan. A recent independent study said hundreds of civilians, including 176 children, have been killed in the attacks over the last eight years.

U.S. President Barack Obama and his challenger Mitt Romney seem to largely see eye-to-eye on the issue. CNN national security analyst Peter Bergen notes that most Americans "are comfortable with the muscular use of CIA drones against al Qaeda in Pakistan."

The United States rarely comments on the strikes.

The New America Foundation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy group, used Google Maps to pinpoint many of the drone attacks

  • militants deliberately live with women and children to maximize collateral damage in the event of these sorts of strikes. Where's the honor? These men claim to fight for the freedom of their lands from infidels, and yet they use the defenseless as human shields. What cowards. And the whole time, the Pakistani military absolves itself of all responsibility by blaming the US.

  • Ok if you know a known terrorist is in your village, why are you still there? Unless of course you are a terrorist yourself, these guys turn children and women into combatants all the time, so when they are killed they can say America killed women and children, they leave out the part about the guns or bombs they were carrying, this is the way muslims fight, they don't use solders the civilians they force into service are untrained cannon fodder used expressly for this purpose

  • Drone attacks create more militants than they kill, this makes the Military Industrial Complex very happy.
The Taliban have never harmed the US nor have they ever planned to, yet still the neverending occupation continues.

BTW - the Taliban offered to hand over Osama Bin Laden before the invasion if the Americans gave proof that he was guilty of planning 9/11, Bush ignored the offer and started the longest war in US history, a war that has not helped the US at all and will probably end with a T More..

  • I'm kind of not getting the purpose of this whole endless war thing, what was it again? I forget.

In particular, I enjoy the comments about militants deliberately living with their women and children. How dare they live in the same house with their wives! Savages!

Don't get me wrong, I like seeing a terrorist get his just reward as much as the next guy, but this drone business of attacking homes is just wrong.

Pakistan is giving safe harbor to Taliban and Al Q, they should be held responsible More..

    • @Rascal_Doubtlaw

So all a terrorist has to do is suround himself with his family, and it's "hands off". I don't think so. First of all these children could have just as easily been killed by their own families to be used as propaganda. They are more than happy to martyr their own in the name of their sick cult. If you don't believe that, then you havn't been paying attention. Maybe later we can all come to your house, hold hands and sing Kum Ba Ya

  • I wonder what sort of coverage MSNBC and FOX would be offering if out of the clear blue sky there were wedding parties out having their pictures taken or perhaps playgrounds at elementary schools here in the U.S. getting bombed and strafed by unseen pilotless aircraft directed remotely form another continent?

Ya, pretty much all hell would break loose.

    Or not. Meh...

Nobody seems to care that America is at war and has been for over a decade.

    Longer than Vietnam.

    Nobody gives a shit.

    " More..
