Glass Block Install
 Part of channel(s): Liveleakers (promoted)

A glass block install for a church in Erie, Pa . These windows were made and installed with white type s mortar. Not silicone caulking like you find a the big chain stores or even some "Other" glass block companies. Glass block was designed to be assemble and installed with mortar and by doing it this way you can embed wire reinforcing in the mortar joint for max security. Also when you use a mortar joint the block are not in contact with each other and there fore don't cause tension damage "Cracked Block ' In my climate Erie , Pa you need to have the ability to absorb expansion and contraction do to freeze/thaw cycles you just dont get that with a but joint of caulking. Also would like to mention that this window is 100% AMERICAN MADE, The Mfg of the block is Pittsburgh Corning. The Pattern is Decora Thin Line. I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching. Lou

  • We still have glass blocks on our sea front houses down south here from the 1930's. In the 30's it was all the rage, then got hated for 70 years, now it's back in fashion. We had a local airport near me (built in the 30's also) that used to serve flights to France, the entirety of the interior walls were made of glass blocking. It had them right upto the late 70's when it was bulldozed during a land grab. I think Croydon airport (near London) also was built in the same style and used glass block More..

  • Hi LOU, just going through your videos as I had planned along with the other good folk who have been so civil with me.

In previous incarnations I have worked as facility manager/ director and was accustomed to working with contractors such as yourself so I know good work when I see it.

Great work there brother. Hope it never backs off in this economy.

  • Big Lou don't sell no cheap Chinese glass!

Hell yeah, brother... buy American wherever possible. I did our shower wall in floor-to-ceiling glass block a couple of years back... made damn sure to get Pittsburgh Corning.

BTW..... give us a little warning next time before you film your trusty "Dick" and put it on LiveLeak, would ya?

  • Looks like a great job! Questions:

Can you ever install them in other patterns like brick pattern? I'm guessing not, since they have the reinforcement wire.

Do you know what the stone is that you're installing the glass block in? I love the look of that.

  • Are they just held in place by shims prior to the mortar?
I've been doing remodeling for over 25 years but haven't yet worked with glass block.
