The White House insisted Sunday the consequence for Americans not having health insurance is a penalty fee, despite the Supreme Court ruling that it is a tax, and said the debate on the Affordable Care Act should finally end.
White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew said on "Fox News Sunday" that “when the Supreme Court rules” the country “has a final decision” and that the presidential campaigns should focus on the economy and jobs.
“What we need to do is go forward with the implementation” of the law, Lew said.
He also argued the health care law will not result in a tax increase on the middle class, despite a Congressional Budget Office report that it would result in a roughly $27 million increase over the next 10 years.
Lew's remarks were met with strong opposition from GOP congressional leaders.
“He’s doing the best he can with a tough situation,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. “It’s a middle-class tax increase.”
McConnell also said the debate will continue and that the final say will perhaps come in the fall.
“We have one last chance to defeat ObamaCare,” he said on "Fox News Sunday." “And we can do that in the November elections.”

Americans will be paying a huge tax increase, all to insure only 30 million Americans - 10% of the population. Plus the insurance has more holes than a trailer full of swiss cheese. Another ridiculous Devilcrat abortion.

Didn't anybody else learn the lessons allen greenspan learned (when he had to eat crow in front of congress with his tail between his legs) about relaxing wall st. regulations...? We need those reigns tightened around their necks not relaxed again so they can loot more taxpayer $$$

I can't understand how the supreme court calls it a tax, when we all know it is a service fee. And if you don't pay, you are fined with a penalty, which is not a tax.
You can call it what ever you want, we all know the money goes to the big health companies.
If it IS a TAX, then the health companies should also be forced by the government to reduce their prices some. I say this because my current coverage plan (for simple fictional example) will say they will pay only $300.00 for a broken arm More..

@Rhemis The Supreme Court called it a tax because that's what it is. It's collected by the IRS and the penalty amount is income based. Obama's lawyers called it a tax in court the entire time also. They would like to call it a fee or fine because that's what he ran on during his election.
Exactly what money goes to "Big Health Companies"? I work for a medical device manufacturer, we have been told to prepare for layoffs and have already closed some R&D projects this year due to t More..

@cdlcrash You have to look at the proposal as a whole. Even completely throwing out the tax for not buying insurance you may not want, there are many other things in this law that hit the middle class hard. For instance, the "Medical Device tax" being one of the taxes used to pay for this bill (which had doubled in cost since it was proposed) will put a strangle hold on medical device companies. The one I work for is being hit for $153 million in 2013 alone. This is on top of what the More..

The presumption that everyone carrying healthcare coverage will lower costs for all of us is based on insurance company claims that unpaid for emergency room visits raise all our rates. But the fact is they don't need any excuse to raise our rates. This shit is a big giveaway to big insurance. Yes there are some good things in the bill but the mandate really never needed to be there. Obama is just like the rest, selling us out and I bet he is getting stiffed by the insurance companies this elect More..

My outlook is one of epic skepticism. Who on this planet or any other really believes the feds can provide health insurance and health care for 308 million people (that we know of) and not have it devolve into an abysmal sinkhole just like every other federal entitlement. History is not on the feds' side.
Nevermind left this or right that. The feds simply cannot pull this off. Intentions be damned. They will screw the pooch on this program just like every other program they've More..

@Zardoz003 Though you're right about them not needing an excuse to raise rates, that is the primary reason why rates are high. Hospitals charge 4x PLUS the cost of supply/treatment so that insurance companies help cover the costs of patients that do not pay their bills. If, all of a sudden, everyone walking through the door is insured, hospital costs will drop. Thus creating a smaller premium scenario. Of course, there's no reason why hospitals and other health care providers would lower their More..

@copperdog3 That's the other thing, with our government's track record should thye really be taking on more responsibilities? This is more a set of rules iinsurance companies need to follow not a big government grab on insurance, but still, the government is at the moment bloated.
If anything they need to take a hard look at what they are already spending our money on now and picking them all apart getting rid of waste and corruption, not creating new ideas on top of a festering heap of shit. More..

@ILovePickles I understand your point, and I'd add, the Medical Union, (yes it's a Union) limits the amount of those wiching to study towards a medical degree so the pool is small enough to justify the bloated costs.
If anything that should be fixed, and the cost of a medical education should be decreased as well. Furthermore, we the people pay for 60 to 90 % of R&D for drugs and medical devices that we are never compensated for and whos patents are held by private industry.

If you or your employer are paying for your health insurance you don't have to worry if this a penalty of a tax. Only the drifters who use the emergency room for free healthcare and leave the rest of us with the bill have to worry if its a penalty or a tax.

@Inga Binga Wrong. I can't afford insurance. I have been to the emergency room twice in the last two years and paid for all of it. I have to cup a couple employees out of work when this goes official, so have they really been helped. Some people are really vocal about hoping this passed and some see it otherwise. See if you can guess who is going to be looking for work.

Penalties cannot be taxes, and taxes cannot be penalties. The Obamacare mandate can only be allowed to proceed as a tax.
Obama will paint himself into a corner if he keeps insisting the fee is not a tax. He is in effect saying he's not bound by Robert's decision, while celebrating it at the same time.
He wants to have his cake and make us eat it too.
