Crane in a day.

Raising a crane in Manhattan in one day by a professional group of crane erectors NYR (New York Riggers). Ostensibly an ad for the group but the film gives a good idea of the joints between sections and the pins that go through them and the effort required to push them home! 1.55+

  • Jimmy Lomma (owner of new york crane) is such a scumbag and he should be in prison and he shouldnt even be allowed to put up another tower crane. I had to recover his crane in '08 that collapsed and killed 7 people because the rigging crew and engineers botched the jump. Then because he used chinese steel in another tower crane the super structure came of as it was swinging 6 or some months later killing the operator and pinned it on the mechanic who was facing 15 years.

    • @The Grim what a piece of shit. this crew doesn't seem to have a mind for safety by the looks of it

    • @85cmorning Erecting the crane is the easier part of it, they should have hardhats regardless, jumping the crane is more difficult, this is not jumping. Jumping is where the crane is already working and needs to raise itself with the progress of the building. I can't lie sometimes it is annoying to wear a hardhat.

    • @The Grim oh I agree, but when you've got live loads above your head 'annoying' is a pretty crappy excuse. not that a hard hat will save you from any substantial impact, but you just have to wear it anyway. I'm a roofer, and I don't wear mine when there is nothing above me to fall, but any time we have cranes loading the roof, you're sure as shit I've got it on. I'm not trying to be a stickler for safety, but common sense and the nature self preservation would dictate that you watch out for your More..

    • @85cmorning There definitely not even wearing harnesses, the problem is when you work with cranes and do it so often you become so complacent. You can do the work in your sleep and there's been times I've had 20 tonne counterweights over my head. Not that I enjoyed it but sometimes its unavoidable. It's such a mistake to become complacent because thats when the accidents happen and you're the least prepared.

    • @The Grim this shit really hit close to home for me about a year ago when a dude the same age as me was killed on the site where I was. a two ton steel beam fell on his head. dead on fucking valentine's day, how would like your wife/girlfriend to deal with that for the rest of her life? not to mention your mother, father, siblings, children and every other person who cares about you. sometimes shit is unavoidable and in certain situations proper safety measures are not feasible, but whenever yo More..

  • Why do I see guys not wearing hard hats?

    Not a very professional crew/foreman.

    • @CatJuggler A lot of guys who work with cranes don't wear hardhats, i would do erections all the time and it's a bad habit to get into, guys who do this type of work in NYC are probably the most professional there are and extremely good at what they do. It's just a stupid habit they get into to take the hardhat off.

  • Professional group? It took a whole day?It should take a lot less than a day and does'nt need as many riggers to put up a tower crane.
Having said that, they probably spent most of the day waiting for trucks to turn up.

    • @larfer It takes a long time to put up a tower crane with all the logistics involved, the hardest part is getting all your ducks in a row and squeezing through the streets of NYC having the trucks in a staging area without circling all day and not getting in a bind for some unknown reason which happens with cranes ALLLLL THE FUCKKING TIME! And much of the time there are time restrictions as well. I have a crane license but not for tower cranes, fuck that they only get a couple extra bucks an hou More..

    • @larfer Easy for a Brit to say when there isn't a building over 4 stories in your entire country. :)

  • ever think about tying off or putting a fuckin' hard hat on? I dunno, maybe the US has shitty laws that don't protect the workers. I'm pretty you'd get fined up the ass and probably given a stop-work order for this type of shit in Canada
