I remember watching some documentary about military planes. They showed US crewman scouring a runway for even the smallest debris to protect whatever US planes were operating in that airfield. They then cut to some dilapidated runway in Russia and explained the engines were designed to ingest material without damage and hence operated in basically an unmaintained environment. Different design philosophies for sure.
Maybe not cutting edge but the Russian stuff will still be flying around at leas More..

bullseye. soviet, and now russian military strategy is to still engage in warfare even after nuclear strikes, whereas american strategy is to engage as effectively as possible before nuclear fallout.

@mr_gunaseelan never thought about it that way but makes sense lol xD US military is all about attack, our navy is larger than the 13 largest of other countries combined. All our weapons are meant to be used overseas. We don't really need tanks over here.

@GXst Funny you say that about how big the Navy is. Did you hear Romney talking about how tiny our Navy is today vs the past? He makes it sound like the US Navy is a runt that needs some $teroid$ to survive.

i thought it was funny how Obama was clowning him about how even though the US doesnt have a large army as it did in 1916, neither does it have as many military horses and men with bayonets...

@wanderlone They asked an American General - what's more valuable - a tank or a soldier? The General responded - we'd gladly sacrifice 10 tanks to save a single soldier. Then they asked the same question to a Russian General. "What's more valuable - a soldier or a tank?". The General responded immediately: "What's easier to make?".

Those antonovs are sick planes. U can fuel em with russian wodka piss and take off from a postage stamp lying in frozen mud. Thats great engíneering and sum real crazy steel-balled pilots.

@freakshow That's a good description of Russian engineering in general. I've read similar descriptions about the AK47 and the trucks that ford streams with water up to the top of the engine box and come out the other side like nobody's business.

That's why Russians are so tough, because they live through s**t we can't even imagine. Any normal pilot would be like "aw, hell no!", but not Russian pilots they're like "Igor, hold my vodka and watch this s**t..."

@ArmAdillo_LT Well, I'm not sure as there are so many variables to take into account. However, I'm sure about one thing and that is there are more pussies (men) in the civilized world than there are in Russia. Maybe that's because they don't have much to lose but still.

i wonder if at any point in time the pilot or anyone on board thought that this maybe isn't such a good idea? well he did it and pulled off a rednecks wetdream "to go mudding in a airplane"

Impressive! Take-off distance must have been considerably longer due to all that extra mud drag.
