G.I. Joe Named Toy of 20th Century

The battle-hardened Hasbro action figure, which first hit toy shelves in 1964 as the Vietnam War ratcheted up, was picked by visitors to the Children's Museum of Indianapolis' website as the top choice. The original 12-inch soldier, relaunched as a smaller action figure in the 1980s, has captured the imaginations of young children for years.

The museum picked their top 100 toys of the last century and put them up for a vote that 24,000 people participated in.

  • On Christmas, 1966, I got an Astronaut John Glenn G.I.Joe with pressure suit, Mercury Space Capsule, and a forty-five rpm phonograph recording of the transmissions between Glenn and Mission Control during his Space Flight. I'd turn off the lights and float that capsule all over the house while playing the record.

    It was awesome.

  • Man, this brings back memories. Not sure if I had the original, but it was in the first couple of years. If I wasn't terrorizing the neighborhood with my friends in mock skirmishes, I was planning strategy with Joe's help.

  • My first Joe was the dark painted-hair soldier who talked when you pulled his dog tag. The only one of his lines I can remember is, "Bring a stretcher up here!" Then I got the red painted-hair sailor. I had a shit load of those guys. They're who made me who I am today!

  • My old man would have had a fit if he ever caught me playing with dolls.

  • My parents never gave me guns or military dolls, they viewed it as giving war a positive image(both my parents have done active service in the army). For me the best toy was my Thunderbirds collection or my red 1970's dragster bicycle that I rode until it the tyres wore through. To give a war toy top billing for me is not a good sign of cultural maturity.
