A strong Democratic talking point for the past few days has been a mini-flashback to 2008, namely that John McCain saw 27 years of Mitt Romney’s tax returns and decided Sarah Palin was a preferable choice. McCain finally responded today in an exclusive interview with POLITICO,
insisting that Palin was the better candidate, but it had nothing to do
with Romney’s returns, and dismissed such speculation as “stupid.”
RELATED: Rahm Emanuel: John McCain Looked At Romney’s Tax Returns And Decided Palin Would Be A Better VP
POLITICO reports that McCain “grew angry” with the claim, and
explained that nothing in Romney’s tax returns made his campaign decide
Palin would be a safer choice.
“Of course not… I don’t know what depths these people
won’t reach. Obviously, it’s just outrageous. That’s just outrageous. It
shows the – it’s so disgraceful for them to allege something that they
have absolutely no knowledge of.”
The charge has been repeated by Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, CNN contributor James Carville, and Maryland governor Martin O’Malley. McCain said that Romney was looked over and ruled out as other candidates like Tim Pawlenty were, and his campaign concluded Palin was the best choice for the ticket. He dismissed the speculation as “stupid questions.”
For what it’s worth, McCain 2008 strategist Steve Schmidt also denied that the tax returns were a problem for the campaign, and there is certainly no love lost between Schmidt and Palin. However, Schmidt did admit they considered Romney’s wealth a problem.
“Sen. McCain got caught flat-footed answering a question
about how many houses he owned… In fact, they were Cindy McCain’s
properties but that distinction was lost in the political optics and we
knew it would be a big liability that the presidential and the vice
presidential candidates together owned more than a dozen homes. It was
like something out of a ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit. I mean, come on.”
McCain has publicly maintained a good relationship with Palin, and joked in April that Palin would make a good VP nominee for Romney.

That is even MORE damning than when we thought the tax returns were the problem.
McCain ACTUALLY believed that a half-term Alaska governor with a shallow idea of foriegn affairs and a clumsy way with the press was more acceptable than Ro-money! Its good that they have 4 more years because Republitards really need to regroup!

Whole point of this post is Romney released 23 years of taxes to McCain but refuses to now. Palin was a nobody and Romney had been a decent governor so I'm guessing McCain is lying about the returns or never saw them himself.

Not to mention Romney was applying for VP, not POTUS.
In my opinion if you are applying for President of the United States I want to know your money situation is a given.
Not sure why college grades are sealed. I would like to see Bush's and all the other P's in history.

@dcmfox Bottom line fox is that mitt represents the successful white businessman that has troubles relating and talking to the common man. McCain never saw his freakin tax returns, He was surrounded by advisers bad advisers... No republican could have beaten him, Hell half the white race thought the blacks would riot if he lost. So lots said Fu@k it, give them a chance regardless if he has Zero experiance and never had to be responsible for any type actual Governing of people or property... Fa More..

Lol, with the shit storm still happening I wonder why the gop wants the potus because it will be shit for at least three more years with anybody as potus, save your money and let the dems clean the mess up and then take over, like they did last time. But the gop knows what that problem is and its called Clinton. She will clean anyones clock in 16 period.

There was NO mess until the dems took over with their "Great Society" Agenda. There was NO larger middle class then when true capitalism was running this country and liberty was the focus.....

Desperation chose Palin really does matter about Mitts money shit, but its a great point and it was just arrogance to release one year of income.
College records are sealed for potus but college finance isn't so mitt fucked up because its almost to late to release them now and they are HUGE, think 20 phone books worth. It would be enough to dominate the debate until the election.
I think it was a fatal error if I look at it in gaming terms.

Choosing Palin was mostly due to the push from McCain's campaign strategist Steve Schmidt. He then later realized the disgrace and horror Palin became to the campaign rather than help McCain. At that point it was just too late, McCain being the bigger more humble man embraced it and let it all be.

The damage that this woman still causes 4 years after her nomination is unbelievable...
Palin would have made a great president once McCain had succumbed of a heart attack after a few days of suffering her stupidity in the White House.
I wonder if she would be running for re-election right now...
...and obviously she would.

McCain married wealthy woman and he didn't want VP who had a huge inheritance. Too much $$$. McCain thought Palin had "common touch" - able to draw in non-rich voters. Ro-money is struggling with same problem now - who can he pick as VP that will connect his rich campaign with "johnny lunch pail"? After all that Bain greed, my suggestion: Romney should name the President of the AFL-CIO or the UAW as his VP. Millions of Americans are represented by unions but that kind of bol More..

I don't like Romney but its plainly obvious that at the time Palin had much more of a political following than he did and she was obviously the better choice for that alone.
Who knows how much this played in the decision but I think regardless of the mans past Palin was still the VP he would have chosen.
