A New Haven towing company has released surveillance video from an incident earlier this week where a mother and daughter are facing criminal charges for assaulting a pregnant receptionist. More below.
A police officer responded to Crown Auto at 388 Crown St. in New Haven around 9 p.m. on Monday for a report of an assault and found three women, who were yelling at each other, and one man locked in the fenced-in tow yard, according to a news release from police.
One employee told police he'd locked the gate to prevent the alleged assailants, Robyn Handy, 51, and Rojonna Handy, 24, both of Elsworth Avenue in New Haven, from getting away, police said.
The attack that prompted company workers to call police was caught on tape by their surveillance cameras. The company released the video to the media on Friday.
Here's what police say happened that night:
Robyn told police she’d brought her daughter to the tow company to get her car after it was towed because of outstanding taxes owed to the city, police said.
Robyn claimed she told the tow truck driver that the tax bill was paid a month ago, but did not have a tax release to claim her car, according to police.
Robyn told police she paid the taxes to a tow truck driver who gave her a receipt written on a business card. It was that card she gave to this tow truck driver, who took it and wouldn't return it, police said.
Robyn said she wanted the card back to prove her transaction, but when she asked for it at the office, she was told it had been lost, police said.
She claimed that the female clerk at the tow company assaulted her because she blocked the gate with her foot.
Police interviewed the receptionist, who told police she'd listened to the women's complaint and claim they'd fulfilled their obligation to the city, then she explained that payments are accepted only at the city's tax office or at Crown Towing's office and advised the women to return in the morning to clear up the matter with her boss, police said.
The receptionist told police that Rojonna Handy then got in her car and started driving toward her.
The car bucked forward, but the receptionist did not move and Rojonna got out of the vehicle and continued arguing, police said.
The receptionist asked the mother and daughter to leave several times and tried closing the gate after them, but couldn't because they blocked the gate.
Rojonna pushed her from behind, the receptionist told police. When she again tried to close the gate, both of the women punched her face, scratched her and pulled her hair, police said.
When police reviewed the surveillance tapes, the evidence supported the receptionist’s version of events.
Police also said the “business card receipt” was found torn in pieces at the bottom of a trash can. It was pieced together and entered as evidence. Police said the car is also in evidence.
