Slain Officer Saved Baby's Life

Patsy Lawless remembers last May 12th like it was yesterday. She says her adult daughter was crying hysterically. "She ran into the bedroom, and brought me the baby," Lawless says.

Her one-year-old grandson Jarvis wasn't breathing. His mom called 911.

Officer Jonathan Schmidt was first on the scene. He went right to work, performing CPR. "Then he began to tell us he had three kids and had a baby about his age, rubbing him and pressing him, then he (Jarvis) went to crying," Lawless remembers.

Jarvis survived. He's a happy kid now, who is growing up fast. The Lawless family will be forever grateful. When they heard Officer Schmidt, the man who saved Jarvis's life, was killed in the line of duty, family members say they were devastated. "I'm really sad about the whole thing because that night I believe my grandson would have died," Lawless says.

Trumann is a small town. For example, members of the Lawless family live right around the corner from the street where Officer Schmidt was killed.

Police say Schmidt made a routine traffic stop, when one one of the passengers in the car opened fire. The suspect was later identified as 37-year-old Jerry Lard. Police wouldn't speculate on why he began shooting, but they say much of the incident was caught on dash-cam video.

Witnesses say before Schmidt died, he managed one more heroic act. They says he pushed a Sargent on the scene out of harms way. Schmidt's colleagues say he was very much into his job. They say he was a great officer.

The Red Cross honored Officer Schmidt for saving Jarvis's life last year. Those who knew Schmidt say he was a humble hero, a father of three, who simply enjoyed his family and serving the community he loved.
