Safe Mode: On
Giant American Flag Left Laying on the Ground Before Upcoming Obama Event

Today, President Obama is slated to travel to the University of Iowa to campaign in the crucial battleground state. The Obama campaign’s “advance team” has been making preparations for the president’s appearance since Monday, sources at the university tell TheBlaze.

But no one was prepared for the photo that was taken at the Obama speaking location as the Democratic National Convention wrapped up in Charlotte, N.C.

The photo is of the preparation for the president’s speech on the quad of the historic Iowa campus. In the near distance sits the stately old Iowa Capitol, and sitting on the ground, a gigantic American flag.

The American Flag Code states clearly that the National Colors should never, ever touch the ground. Section 8 of the code is entitled “Respect for flag” and notates:
“No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.”

It continues:

“The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.”
The photo was posted on the University of Iowa’s official Facebook page with the caption: “Preparations continue on the Pentacrest for tomorrow’s Presidential visit.” The image has sparked outrage and disgust from many viewers.

Men and Women have given their life and limb to protect the American Flag, this is a total lack of respect. The American Flag should never touch the ground.

  • So who are you angry at?

Obama for having this event? Or perhaps for his being PotUS?

The politicians in this country are a far greater embarassment than the flag being on the ground. I am far more outraged at the state of American politics than I am about the flag touching the ground.

I am far more outraged at the treatment of our honored veterans when they seek treatment for PTSD, or other long lingering wounds and effects from various wars.

I am far more disgusted by how much Americans More..

      So does the Olympic committe:

The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.

  • Jesus Christ, the flag is bigger than my house. What do you expect? The law was written when flags were much smaller (3' x 5' is a standard size). I bet that that huge flag has touched every 'flag code' violation possible from when it was manufactured all the way to when it was placed on that ground.

I am sure no intended disrespect was done. Common sense and responsibility is needed here. The nit-picking continues....

At what point during manufacturing of the American does this code apply to More..

  • Here are some other rules the Republicans are equally guilty of and are consider signs of disrespect:
"The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally"
"No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform."
"The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever."
"The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery."
I have seen this done a multiple events - parades, the Olympics, etc. More..

  • Sad. Every time I see something like this, it reminds me of how forgetful people are for those who sacrificed everything for our benefit. The Flag Code was put in place for this exact reason......to remind those who look at our flag as a piece of colored cloth, and little else.

  • Guess no one cares about the flag on the building not being displayed correctly. There are rules to be followed and respected; especially when it comes to our branches of government

Thought this was for Obama. BTW, the rules apply to all US citizens. I was suggesting that our government should take extra special care. Disrespect your flag and you disrespect all that have fallen in defense of it. In my opinion, it is the most hallowed symbol of our great country and it deserves better than being left on the ground; and I don't care who left it there, pick it the fuck up.

Call it what you want. Good men died for the honor, pride and freedom that our flag represents. If someone decides they want to desecrate that flag. That is their constitutionally protected right, but that doesn't make it okay.

  • People have to realize is this is linked to Obama, who cares nothing about legal Americans or anything American related; He wants votes from the idiots who voted for him once and have yet to come to their senses that he is a complete and utter failure as a leader. Those people, and the illegals.

Apparently you might want to re-read the story yourself. Keywords there are "Obama campaign’s advance team". I agree with you on part of the blame is on I/U employees yes, however, this in More..

    • @boredin2008 lol no use arguing with an idiot, but you just admitted IU is responsible for this (IU employees aren't necessarily an advance team), hence clearing blame of anyone else, end of story

and if you want to point fingers, i'd be willing to bet they've done the same in republican events

oh and how much you wanna bet that flag was made in china in some sweatshop factory....yeah...talk about respect...

      nice try though
