  • Obviously, the GPS co-ords have been recovered.

As for dates, can't see that being an issue. Could be something simple as stickers, IC's with printed mfc info on the top.

Pretty sure the current and future 'self wipe' processes will be updated to stop this happening again.

  • So they are blaming Americans for faulty work?

    LOL!!!

    • @mytwocents That's not what he said. They're boasting about all they have learned from the logs recovered from the vehicle. A terabyte HDD weighs less than a kilogram and could easily store all that data. If they used weak internal encryption not anticipating this then it could be recovered. We'll never know but you can bet Uncle Sam is taking a close look at how accurate these claims are.

One can imagine that a bird like this captures a lot of data and streams some of it back compressed and wi More..

  • There we have it, God gave them the decryption keys. LOL.

Interesting if true that this RQ-170 was flying over Bin Laden.

I'm a bit surprised that it would store complete logs of all past flights but it's not unfeasible.

  • Probably Jet Propulsion Labs in Pasadena. Lockheed Martin has a lot of stuff there.

  • They claimed to have shot this down with a missile. So its then fallen how many thousand feet in pieces, not much to recover.

If it crashed as the US claim it still fell from high altitude, so not much left.

    • @skerne

It was 'supposedly' taken over by Electronic means.
It's pretty clear by now that it landed ok and was not hit by any missile. Too many photographs out showing its condition.

    • @Obba41 When our UAVs break Satlink with the pilots, they are programmed to return to base and land using its GPS system. It is scary if you have a jet on the runway, because UAVs cant see whats on the runway. unfortunately this plane used the closest runway to land on using ILS and landed in thier hands.

Thanks for the reply. So you're saying the Iran airfield was in its database?
That means that the runway in question was equipt with ILS hardware. I thought there wasn't that many ILS runways, much less than in Iran - which if so, means it landed at a major airfield.

    • @Obba41 I can only assume yes. Im not the subject matter expert on this system, but this is how they come down when link is broken.

  • I've been assuming all along the thing belly-landed with its gear up, because they covered up the underside in the early PR pictures. They'd have no reason I can think of to do that unless it was damaged, whereas they had every reason to lie about bringing it down intact under their own control. To me this means they did not cause it to land, rather, it crashed on its own.

If they did bring it down, I would surmise it would have been done by crudely jamming its signals. Which probably isn't More..

Lol, I bumped thumbs-up when aiming for Reply.

Actually, if it GLIDED to a landing as I said, it might very well have survived more or less intact, depending where it landed. Many planes, if not most, are inherently stable and will glide like a paper airplane when unpowered and uncontrolled.

But the landing was not necessarily a smooth one. Some very thoughtful analyses of images of the captured drone indicate that both wings had probably broken off.

  • the next time this ever takes to the sky, it will be shot down by another drone, im sure they havent cracked the call back home codes when the thing is live.....

  • Yep. Sounds like they got all kinds of top secret stuff out of the drone. They found something that said "Made in USA," and that's an intelligence coup? Brilliant!
