9/16/11 - Reno, Nevada Air Race Crash - New Angle (Unobstructed View)
Part of channel(s): Reno, Nevada Air Race Crash (current event)

Just found this one and figured I would share, as all the other videos so far have not shown the full impact unobstructed. All I can say is "damn". Any difference in where he landed could have been so much more catastrophic. RIP.

  • These races take place right down the road from my house in Reno yet I refuse to attend. People always ask me why I don't go. Something tells me they wont ask me anymore.

  • Just watching the news here, and it shows a picture of the cockpit, but no pilot head, they are saying the pilot might of passed out.

    • @k57 He would have saved more lives if he had of staying home that day. Instead he killed several.

    • @smeblee If that canopy was modified to something like 'Strega' or 'Dago Red' planforms, the pilots head would be nestled out of view behind that canopy frame. He would only have a large enough windscreen to see out of. Thus, for all appearances, the aircraft would have looked to have no pilot in it. Had the pilot passed out (G-loc -- etc.) his flight harness would have kept his unconcsious body pinned to the back of the seat and you (at most) would have seen his head slumped forward. To hav More..

  • That is amazing how Fast it fell out of the sky. Per the reports, it did indeed look like the pilot evaded the grandstands from that video angle. RIP

I don't know how anyone can get to that conclusion knowing that the plane may have been locked in a nose-up attitude.
Additionally is seems that the throttle was not pulled back, which could indicate that the pilot lost consciousness before or during that final loop.

  • As far as I understood he sacrificed his life to stay in the aircraft to pull it out off the dive as much as possible, so as to not hit any of the people on the ground. A mechanical failure led to the crash, not pilot error as many believe, and this true hero did whatever he could to save his fellow man on the ground. RIP

    • @Johnny2k

Jimmy was out cold from the beginning of the rolling climb. Pictures of the plane show that Jimmy's head wasn't visible in the canopy as it would be if he were watching where he was going. You're right about the failure of the trim tab causing the crash but if Jimmy could have controlled the plane enough to miss the crowd he could have controlled it enough to land it (see: http://law.hukuki.net/reno-p-51-pilot-a-hero.htm).

    • @rpurdey Well as far as I understood he pulled so many G`s initially to roll out away from the crowd, that he passed out. Of course, at 74 years old, the body might not take the G`s as well as back in the day..

  • Instead of people running their lips about how old this man was or he was too old to fly...I ask, please look at the facts 1st because you only make yourself look foolish.

This pilot had a mechanical issue...a piece of the tail fin broke away and he called in a mayday. Mechanical issues contributed to the crash not AGE.

Also from what I've read they found the memory card to the onboard camera which shows the crash from the pilots perspective.

    • @MadMike740 There's also been reports this plane had been heavily modified. Causing structural weakening of the plane and contributing to the crash. This guy isn't a fukn hero.

    • @buddymr Asshole, mods are reported to the FAA for approval. He definitely did not fly in an Air race without inspection. Just like the car drivers in NASCAR the men and women who fly, undergo inspection and safety reviews. Man you are so stupid. And don't fucking repeat stupid shit you heard from your idiot source again. All aircraft annual and 100-hour records would reflect the changes and must be up to date to even compete.

    • @ASSASSYN360 Are they fuck reported to the FAA in entirety! If that was the case, how come the FAA knew nothing about the counterfeit parts (20% of all new parts fitted) to Air Force One? Also, how come they never knew about the 35% of new parts in the entire boeing fleet were all counterfeit? Reason? Because of failures systemic within the FAA to verify all parts and maintenance (especially anything upwards of B checks, which a modification would come under).

Just because you think an inspecti More..
