Beer Geek Challenge - Full Sail Old Boardhead Barleywine Ale Review
 Part of channel(s): Yoursay (promoted)

Welcome to the Summer of Love for American Breweries, Baby!

With even the most iconic American breweries now owned by multi-national corporations, what's a patriotic alcoholic to do but show his support for the little brewers of America?

Won't you join me in showing your support for your favorite local and regional American beers? Send your recommendations or do your own YourSay.... I don't care, I'm piss-faced.

I'm on a quest this summer to sample the best America has to offer... and I won't take sober for an answer.

  • well i'm in canada so i don't know the regional beers in the states, and in my mid 20's soooo... i'll drink whatever the fuck is labelled "beer"

Creemore Springs is probably one of my favourite craft beers in my area. (Ontario)

I've heard good things about Yuengling which i think is a beer in the midwest states and is gaining popularity.

And when i was in Orlando a few years ago i really liked drinking Landshark beer. But it's not my usual type of beer, it was good for a hot vacatio More..

I'm saving Canadian beers for Boxing Day.

I've tried the LandShark... and I agree it's a good beer for sitting on the beach and slamming them back.

I probably should have mentioned that it's 65 degrees and overcast here... more of a high abv "sipping beer" weather.

  • Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, Hair of the Dog Blue Dot Double IPA, Russian River "Pliny the Younger," Hair of the Dog "Matt."

None of those will disappoint -- I guarantee it.

I've tried the Dogfish Head and Pliny the Younger.... and I agree heartily.

I'll see if I can track down some "Hair of the Dog" from my local purveyor.... Oregon beers are high on my list.

  • i don't really know about the really strong beers...9% is way too much if you ask me. 6.5 is my max or i'm shitface drunk after a few

Sounds like a polite way of saying I need an intervention.

Sorry ...... Don't mind me, that's just the Full Sail talking.

      9% beer?
      wtf....thats too high for beer.
      name a beer thats 9%?

    • @BeerBasher

The beer being reviewed here is 9% alcohol.

I have a beer in my fridge right now that's 14% alcohol; "Samiclaus" from Austria. I also know of a beer that is 18% alcohol... but it's $32 a bottle. Too rich for my blood.

      a $32 beer thats 18%?
well i'll be damned. Never heard of anyone drinking beer like that.
It would be good tho... your girlfriend or wife could say "how many beers you had today" and you can just say "iv only had a few, i swear"....but really you have drank 2 dozen.

  • I like buying the Micro-Brewery malts mostly because of the name/label they put on them. So I know I'm disqualified for projecting my erected pinky thoughts on this one. Cheers!

Although, a Nimbus Dirty Güera (Blonde) Ale once in a while ain't to bad.

    http://www.nimbusbeer.com/main.htm <-----Made in Tucson, AZ.

And the label is pretty cool too!

    • @Arizona_Patriot

A cool label is always a good reason to at least try a beer... hell, just being thirsty is good enough for me.

I tried a couple of the Nimbus beers when I was in Tucson a couple of months back. Went to Total Wine and blew $100 in about ten minutes.

Thought about looking you up for a taco at Chuy's... but sadly, everything evolved around my wife's family. Maybe next time.

  • I bought what I thought to be a new SEAGRAMS cooler over the weekend. They had 12 different flavors, at a buck a bottle. Tried 5, thinking they were made with SEAGRAMS , as printed all over the bottle. Got home and opened one and it tasted good, except reading the ingreadients on the back of the bottle, in small letters it said FLAVORED BEER. The shit was only 3.2 alch. also.

Damn! That's almost the alcohol equivalent of taking a hooker home from the bar and finding out she has a dick.

Either way, you feel tricked and you want your money back.

    • @Pestis

      Lol.... nice.

I went to a cattle branding once where the rancher bought a bunch of beer for the people helping out.... when his wife saw him unloading cases of Keystone Light she yelled out "you sure don't think much of your help, do you?"

Truth be told.... when I'm hot and thirsty, the only kind of beer I need is one that's cold and wet.

  • I'm a Full Sail Amber Ale man myself.
Well, back when I used to drink beer anyway.
These days I find vodka more economical and less filling.

    Posted Jul-16-2012 By

  • Fat tire also makes a good amber ale.

    Posted Jul-16-2012 By

    • @Tongueboy

Yep... Fat Tire is one of my old stand-bys. I only live a few hours from the New Belgium Brewery in Fort Collins, CO so I stop in whenever I pass through. The whole company is employee-owned and wind-powered. Pretty awesome place.

    • @EventHorizon2012 You might also look into Black Butte Porter.
      A very dark beer.
This sounds odd but it's really good.
Take a pint glass, pour in about a 5th or a quarter of a pint of good coffee, I'm not talking Folgers but maybe a nice dark French roast, and top it off with Black Butte Porter.
A nice hearty drink that will keep you awake so you can enjoy more ;o)

  • I used to live a block away from the Widmere brewpub in Portland. Their Heffeweizen is a great summer beer and I am sure I spelled that wrong.
