Haaretz poll: Most of the public in Israel opposes an Israeli strike on Iran

Most Israelis believe that if the United States does not attack Iran's nuclear facilities, Israel must no try to do so alone, according to a Haaretz poll.

U.S. magazine forms Iran war 'doomsday clock,' sets it to 10 minutes to midnight - The Atlantic project assembles a panel of scholars, journalists – including Haaretz's Amos Harel – in trying to estimate the chances of all-out war erupting in the Middle East. Chances for war between Israel and Iran now stand at 48 percent.

Most Israelis believe that if the United States does not attack Iran's nuclear facilities, Israel must no try to do so alone, according to a Haaretz poll.

The Haaretz-Dialog poll, conducted under the supervision of Prof. Camil Fuchs of Tel Aviv University on Sunday and Monday during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington, also showed that the prime minister's Likud party would win big in the next election, taking between 35 and 37 seats.

However, Netanyahu, who returned to Israel on Wednesday, is facing a complex political situation.

On the one hand, he and his party seem to be in top political form. On the other, 58 percent of those polled opposed an Israeli strike on Iran, without U.S. backing.

Thus it seems Netanyahu has not convinced those for whom he has been repeatedly threatening Tehran.

Even so, half the respondents said they are relying on Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak to handle the Iran issue.

U.S. magazine forms Iran war 'doomsday clock,' -

Chances for war between Israel and Iran now stand at 48 percent, a new "doomsday clock" initiative by the U.S. magazine The Atlantic indicated on Thursday.

The new "Iran War Clock" utilizes a wide-ranging panel of experts in order to form what The Atlantic hopes would be an educated estimation as to the chances of all-out war in the Middle East. The project is an apparent take on the famous "Doomsday Clock , initiated by scientists to try and work out how close was mankind to the end of the world.

Presently the Iran War Clock is set to 10 minutes to midnight, with a current 48 percent probability of war erupting with Iran. The panel of experts includes Haaretz's own military analyst Amos Harel, as well as prominent scholars and journalists.

According to The Atlantic, each "panelist makes an individual estimate about the percentage chance of war and we report the average score. Based on this number, we adjust the Iran War Clock so that the hand moves closer to, or further away from, midnight."

"We're humble about the accuracy of this prediction, which is really a collective 'gut-check' feeling. But it may be closer to the truth than the alternative forecasts available."

In January, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists said that the more veteran and all-inclusive Doomsday Clock was moved to five minutes to midnight, the first adjustment since the beginning of 2010, when it was moved back one minute to six minutes from midnight -- or "doomsday".

"Two years ago, it appeared that world leaders might address the truly global threats that we face. In many cases, that trend has not continued or been reversed," the group said in a statement.

    • @aydeo If Iran launched 1000 missiles in ONE day against Isreal, I'd bet it would only happen once before Isreal wiped them off the map with their nukes.

The tragedy is that a war doesn't seperate between anyone, including those who oppose it, doesn't matter if it's Syria,Iraq,Israel or Africa.

I already brought here 2 stories of Israelis like me which still payed with their lifes during the conflict, and there are others, from both sides.

  • The bottom line is that israel is unwilling to fight its own war. They want American lives on the line, they already spend our money for weapons but they also want Americans to sacrifice their lives because they are too cowardly to fight their own fight.

USA had help in WW1, WW2, Vietnam, Korea, Iraq war, kosovo, afghanistan and cold war.

israel fought alone against multiple armies in 48, 67, 73, lebanon war 1 and in its ongoing political battles against the entire arab world and UN.

the bottom line is without israel saddam would have had an atomised army fighting us in 1991.

without israel, america wouldnt be able to supply afghans with weapons against russia for its own cold war.

israels high tech software and intellegence r More..

thats so true but people like him will always ignore it. always.

plus- in 1991 america had to put allot of pressure on israel not to retaliate against saddam and israel indeed didn't attack, even that 40 heavy missiles landed inside More..

The only war Israel TRULY fought by itself was '48.

This incredibly pro-Israel website will show you that.

  • the title is a poor choice for this article. thats the thing about media. they are sneaky. the way the article is written this is what the title should say:
Haaretz Poll: Most of the public in Israel opposes an Israeli only strike on Iran.

but on the serious note. has anyone ever looked at the map. and looked into where US Military bases are over there. if i am not mistaken the entire country of Iran is surrounded by US Military Bases. Why is it Israel can demand Iran open every single More..

read my first reply about comments of many in Israel against any kind of strike- do you realy believe that people here wish to get thousands of missiles on them and their children heads????

    • @aydeo

i know ppl dont want that especially on their children. but i am sure if there were another poll that asked if they would oppose a joint US/Israeli strike on Iran they wouldnt question it. but the reality is whether the US does it alone or helps or Israel does it alone or asks for help...either way Iran will retaliate and attack Israel...so in my opinion this is just going to be a lose/lose war. but Israel needs to man up and sign the NNPT and allow IAEA and UN inspections...especial More..

A joint American-Israeli strike still means thousands of rockets over Israel and many around here in Israel simply don't want such kind of scenario.

    • @aydeo

I know ppl in Israel really dont want a war...but if its joint US/Israel, Iran wont have a chance since its surrounded by US Military bases on all its borders. besides its time Israel steps up and shows the world they themselves are doing nothing illegal and have nothing to hide and allow IAEA inspections and sign the NNPT
