@wharris Since the airfields would be hit immediately during war, most of our European allies have alternate "highway" airfields, including parts of the autobahn.
The Luftwaffe used the autobahn extensively during WWII.
Nato forces used to have a yearly exercise during the cold war using parts of the autobahn as alternative airfields.
They've landed C130's on it, and alledgedly, they can operate C5's from it.
