Projecting mass produced synthetic gasoline in 15 years.
Genius Brit engineers have pioneered a new technology that produces petrol – from air.
Experts hailed the breakthrough as a potential “game-changer” as scientists seek to solve the world’s energy crisis.
The small company from the north England has developed “air capture” technology which creates synthetic petrol with only air and electricity.
Company chiefs say they have produced five litres of petrol in less than three months at a small refinery in Stockton-on-Tees, Teesside by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.They now hope to build a large plant generating more than a tonne of petrol per day within two years – and a refinery size operation within the next 15 years.
The fuel works in any petrol tank and promises to be “completely carbon neutral” so long as renewable energy is used to provide the electricity.

As with most of these crap ideas it requires far more energy to produce the fuel than it will ever deliver.
Factor in the loss of energy to other energy sinks that will have to be replaced by fossil fuel or nuclear sources and you will find this is an insanely expensive and futile exercise.

@DEADBEEF
Yes, there will be a loss in energy.
But even with a relatively great loss, it could be very interesting for energy storage.

@DEADBEEF
Yep. The portability and storability of the fuel makes it attractive, but we have to have some other cheap, plentiful energy source first in order to be able to produce this. Wind and solar are not efficient or plentiful enough yet to remotely fit that need, and people are too opposed to more nuclear plants to make that viable. So once someone perfects a scheme for a cheap, reliable, plentiful energy source, then we can think about synthesizing fuel to make that energy more portab More..

@GReaper
That's not my point.
Yes there is a loss of energy just like batteries and fly-wheels lose energy.
My point is that using renewable energy to power this incredibly inefficient process means that renewable energy is no longer available to replace conventional sources. This means conventional sources have to be used.
In energy and economic terms this process is essentially powered by conventional energy; it sucks up far more conventional power than it could ever deliver back to the s More..

Er, why not skip the gasoline and use the electricity to run a car?

@ellhow
One way or another, one has to get the electricity stored efficiently to put into the car. Batteries are bulky and heavy, and they don't currently deliver as much power as fuel combustion. This process, on the other hand, stores the energy as fuel, which is more efficient in a vehicle.
The problem is that this system remains slow and burns way too much energy to create just a few liters of fuel. It's just not efficient enough, and until we have some nearly unlimited supply of elect More..

Ok, just let us know how much energy you need per litre. Making fuel from something, even (literally!) horseshit is not that difficult. It is just a question of the energy you need to turn it into fuel...and this is always a big problem.

@Jroc2877 We have it's been done, proven reliable and even fitted to conventional cars. However, the tech advancement went quiet. The Oil Sheikhs probably put a stop to it with quiet pay offs. They're earning far too much money to let the Hydrogen fuel cell motor come to market.
