Because the players will wear them on national television and millions of people will see their shoes and give them advertising? That couldn't possibly be the reason could it? They are not "giving" them anything they are investing in their products and marketing them.
With that said I agree that Reebok should donate the guy a pair of shoes but it is not their responsibility to do that. If they do it's a good thing if not then I guess he should try Nike or Adidas!

The tallest man in modern history...Robert Wadlow who was 8' 11" and growing when he died was given shoes as a promotional tool by a shoe company. He toured the USA wearing these shoes, but they were poorly made and wore his feet raw...which turned into an infection...which killed him. Ironic and tragic.
