The driver survived and was now in stable condition. The cause of the accident was still under invetigation.

Probably pierced his right lung. I would be surprisd if it missed the inferior vena cava. Anyway I would't want to be the doctor who has to stop the bleeding in the operation room.
I think his chest should be opened, a clamp put on all the right chest blood vessels and only then the bar should be pulled out.
Anyway he will ned a LOT of blood.

Again i always say it because i survived a deadly motorcycle accident.The body can take an insane amount of damage before giving out. I personally almost lost my left leg and left arm no vitals were hit but massive blood loss and shock and almost got me. We can take a licking and keep on ticking. Specially with the well trained people saving you.
