Italy to ban all cash transactions over €50 by 2013 (hoax ? / incorrect ?)

Italy beefs up the cashless control grid by outlawing cash transactions of over €50 from its relatively recent €1000 limit. In other words every electronic transaction that you make in Italy over e50 will be accounted for by the Italian Government.

How long will it be before this will spread to the rest of Europe?

You won’t even be able to fill up your car without a credit or debit card in Italy beginning in 2013, as the Italian Council of Ministers has voted to increase the current capital controls banning the use of cash on transactions over €1,000, down to any transaction over €50!

As we stated when Italy first announced capital controls and caps on cash transactions several months ago, expect bans on cash transactions to be coming to a neighborhood near you in the next 2-3 years.'

      2002 I took out a second mortgage and purchased a dodge van. I cut the check and the transaction was held up. Guess they thought I was a drug dealer what, with paying cash for a van.
      Now after 10 years I wish I could do THAT again.
      Got a new van... only have 75 monthly payments to make util it's all mine.... :(

    Local people won't accept it

    Everyone will find very simple ways around it anyway - "Your bar tab comes to 70euros mate - ok, I'm going to pay for each pint individually with 10euro notes"

    People will buy 49euros worth of groceries/petrol at a time or pay individually for restaurant meals...

    This whole conpept is absolutely bizarre!

      Much simpler than that. You will get cash from your ATMs and still pay everything in cash without invoice , VAT or any other document. This will only make underground economy to grow even more.

  • This news item has circulated across a lot of blogs, but I've not seen it verified anywhere else in English-language news yet. The one news article about it that I have found that's not a straight copy of what is on every other blog is a German-language news piece:

    • @buzzardist But the article states that the EUR 50 limit, as well as the requirement to pay by card has been scrapped from the postponed decree. What remains however is the requirement that shopkeepers and businesses must accept card payment (if the customer so wishes) if the amount is above a certain level.

      Good for the consumer.
