The history of the Canada Cotton Co. Mill at Cornwall, Ont, Canada dates back to the fall of 1882 when the famous Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847 – October 18, 1931) successfully installed his first Edison Lighting System which used electric incandescent lamps enclosed in glass globes. Prior to this system gaslight was the popular choice using various mantles that gave a bright incandescent flame , then a stick of lime would be inserted in the flame to increase its brilliance. The electric lighting system was an evolution in the lumber mill and textile industry, as it was much less of a fire hazard in the dusty working environment.
