Russ George is a California businessman with a big idea: you give him some money and he will seed the ocean with iron, causing phytoplankton to grow. The process is called Iron fertilization, and is designed to take carbon out of the atmosphere to help you mitigate your contribution
to global warming. It is one of a number of business ideas that have grown out of the global demand for carbon trading schemes, and it’s becoming a big business.

A controversial American businessman dumped around 100 tonnes of iron sulphate into the Pacific Ocean as part of a geoengineering scheme off the west coast of Canada in July, a Guardian investigation can reveal. Lawyers, environmentalists and civil society groups are calling it a "blatant violation" of two international moratoria and the news is likely to spark outrage at a United Nations environmental summit taking place in India this week.

Iron fertilization has also occurred in other oceans as well for over 15 years. What is really interesting now is the huge financial incentive with the carbon tax trade-offs, and the internal fight of Gaia-worshipers vs for-profit venturers.
On a higher level, it's another great example of unintended consequences of environmental policies run amuk -- dump tons of iron into the ocean, raking in shiploads of money -- without proof of its grand scheme.

@joe prole Horrible, and to think that they do test but keep that information from the public if it will cut profits direct or indirectly.

@Dimens
They were mostly wood up to around late 1800s. But you're right about shipwrecks around the world; there are over 3 million of all construction materials.

@joe prole -The vid made me think, so i looked the iron ship building era up before posting. I did not know they where still made from wood underneath, thanks for sharing.

This is more of the utter stupidity that is being enabled by the myth of some impending ecocatastrophe that is never actually going to fucking happen.
