There are still several vast ammonal mines lost beneath the Somme battlefields from 1918.

Yeah. Martin Middlemass's excellent book on the Somme says it killed a cow in the fifties.

There doesn't go a week by without some bomb being defused. Fortunately, our guys have the knowledge and the experience to handle this stuff.
It's a pita to check old bomber photos and look for them, sometimes buildings have been placed on them, rarely they are in the open like this one.
The world is full with ordnance, most countries can't afford the techniques and manpower it requires to deal with that.
BTW, I cannot even imagine what it must have been like when those rather small b More..

you DO know they are in the ground because they didn't work? and that's 20% of those who were dropped. additionally when the war was almost over the pilots flew too low so the detonator didn't activate ..

I think they only placed new explosives to break the explosive train. If a 550lb detonated it would of been a larger blast than that.

Yes. Just recently (June, 2010) 3 bomb disposal experts were killed by a 2,000 lb aerial mine. 2 people were seriously injured and 4 with slight injuries.
It is assumed that more then 100,000 Aerial Bombs from WW2 are still in the ground in germany. In my Hometown Hamburg 3000-5000 alone (Hamburg was completely destroyed in air raids during WW2. My grandma told me many stories about it)
The problem is, that these unexploded bombs get more and more dangerous over time.

There are chemicals fuses, that decay over time. It's a piece of cellulose, which is corroded by an acid in a glass vile, which in turn is mechanically smashed.
This mechanism is supposed to detonate the bomb after it has landed, but sometimes it simply fails. Then it's just a matter of time.

That blast would be tiny compared to the blast that would be caused if the 1,400 tonnes of TNT in the munutions on the USS Richard Montgomery, lying at the bottom of the Thames near Sheerness, ever went up.

Just wait, First it was Communism, then terrorism, next it`ll be a threat of a meteor strike, THEN it`ll be aliens. All needed to keep the cash streaming into the military and keep the whole complex running, the scariest thing is weaponizing space, the whole game will change.
