A former New Orleans police detective who was living in Titusville
was sentenced today to 98 months in federal prison for the receipt and
possession of child pornography.Krister
Kaj Vilen, 40, also was ordered by the U.S. District Court to forfeit
the computers and electronic media he used to store the child
pornography. As part of his sentence, Vilen was ordered to serve a
10-year term of supervised release after he completes his prison
sentence and to register as a sex offender under the Sex Offender
Registration and Notification Act. He pleaded guilty on June 19. According
to court documents, between January and March 2012 in Titusville, Vilen
used peer-to-peer software to receive, possess, and share images and
movies depicting child pornography. Law enforcement officers searched
Vilen's computers and found about 40 videos and 100 visual depictions of
sexually abused children. “This particular case is
extremely disturbing because it involves a former New Orleans police
detective,” said Shane Folden, deputy special agent in charge of
Homeland Security Investigations Tampa, which oversees the agency’s
Cocoa Beach office. “Child predators prey on the weak and use positions
of trust to commit their crimes. Homeland Security Investigations
investigates child predators to the full extent of the law. We see that
in this case, Vilen received significantly more time in prison than the
minimum sentence dictates.” The case was investigated by
the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Immigration and Customs
Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. It was prosecuted by
Special Assistant United States Attorney Myrna Amelia Mesa. It was part
of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006
by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child
sexual exploitation and abuse.
