I saw this done by an F-111. However it didn't wimp out after a few hundred feet. It just kept accelerating straight up and a few seconds later was nearly invisible

@DEADBEEF The F-111 was not capable of gaining speed in a completely vertical climb, although it probably did look that way. It was far too heavy. They, along with the F4’s were replaced by F-15's. The F-15E, which I worked on for 4 years, was the only jet in the USAF at that point that could actually gain speed during a max climb takeoff. But the "wimping out" move there, is hardly that.
