Devon and Cornwall Police are releasing dramatic footage of a drink-fuelled collision as part of the Force's annual drink drive Christmas campaign.
The campaign, which will run throughout December, is aimed at highlighting the damage that can be caused by drink driving and reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.
The CCTV footage shows a car, driven by a man who had been drinking, crashing into the Three Elms pub in Brixham and seriously injuring landlord Kevin O'Neill.
The driver, Leigh Brennan, 45 and from Brixham, lost control of his Volvo in March this year as he drove through the town at 60mph and crashed into the porch of the pub.
The landlord was standing in the doorway and suffered a crushed pelvis, broken ribs and spinal injuries after being buried under masonry.
In July the driver received a 12-month prison sentence and was banned for driving for two years.
Inspector Richard Pryce, head of roads policing said: "The devastation caused by drink driving can be seen clearly in the CCTV footage. There was a group of people stood outside the pub just moments before the crash and it is a miracle that no-one was killed and only one person was injured.

Idiot, there are cabs for a reason, cheap ass. Guy should be in jail, along with every other asshole who gets loaded and drives a car. At 27 I have far too many friends who've died due to their own or someone else's negligence. It's amazing to me someone can get to middle age without learning this one simple lesson.

@Ratiocinator How many people crash because they're lighting a cigarette, they dropped a cigarette or they're looking for a cigarette/lighter while they're driving? It's more than statistics show, because people will not admit it and there's no way to prove it (unlike alcohol in the blood).
Add cannabis and its effects on concentration, and smoking cannabis while driving looks almost as bad as drink driving.
In my opinion, smoking of any form behind the wheel should be illegal.

@BikeCam Shenanigans I don't believe Ratiocinator was trying to imply it would be okay to drive while high. He may have just been pointing out the irony of the fact that alcohol destroys countless lives, but it is still legal. Side note: I work in an emergency department and we see a lot of people come in because they drank too much, or they are detoxing to the point of seizure, but I've never had a patient who smoked too much pot or didn't get their pot fix for the day.

The only thing a car driver should be doing is steering the big wheel in front of him, working the gears, and controlling his vehicle. The car is no place for drinking, eating, smoking, cell phone messaging, music playing, or fucking while it is in motion. And the driver should be of sound mind and not high on any drug - especially pharmaceuticals which are legal and kill more people each year than heart disease.
