We live in such a different world today. Those guys back then had huge stones...all men on each side of the war. Think about the devastation and loss of life and it's hard to fathom in today's mindset.

"Liberals" were in charge. Franklin Roosevelt through his "Liberal" ideas not only lead the defeat of both Gremany and Japan he took a country that was devastated by the Depression and revived it through the use of the principal "Liberal" tenet that the government is the instrument of the people through which they seek justice and equal oportunity. If the conservatives of the time had been in charge, the US would have sold the Philippines to the Japanese Empire and left China to twist in the wind - assuming that there hadn't been either a communist revolution or a fascist coup in the US itself by then, which would almost certainly have been by 1936 if it weren't for the 'libs'.
