Cambridge, MA follows Bloomberg's lead, considers ban on sugary drinks

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WHDH) -- The mayor of Cambridge has proposed a ban on larger sizes of sugary drinks.

It has been a hot topic ever since New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg tried to ban the sugary drinks.

Monday night, the city of Cambridge agreed to study the possibility of banning large sugary drinks at restaurants in Cambridge.

Customers at Cambridge restaurants could soon have fewer options to quench their thirst.

“When people are served these gigantic portions of soda in bottomless cups, sometimes it’s just more than people are able to resist,” said Cambridge Mayor Henrietta Davis.

“The government is going too far with those things. It’s the people’s choice to do what they want to do,” one man said.

Sound familiar? They got the idea from New York City where Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to ban restaurants, movie theatres, food carts and even sports arenas from selling sodas and other sugary drinks bigger than 16 ounces -- all to fight obesity.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea. It limits business and it limits people’s choices,” a woman said.

But others say something has to be done to slow down the obesity epidemic.

“I think it’s sad that it’s gotten to that point that people are letting themselves go the point that the government needs to intervene,” a man said.

The health committee will study every aspect of the possible ban and report back to the city council who will make the final decision.

  • Such a stupid thing to ban. All you have to do is buy 2 if you are intent on drinking a lot of soda. Fucking social engineering morons at it again.

  • Wait till they start banning what Americans can eat and drink in their own homes. Can't wait to see what Americans will do. Probably nothing. I mean liberal Americans.

    • @Demonpreyer Half of Americans would love for the government to restrict what they can eat. It would give them a feeling of security.

    • @Demonpreyer
Americans are too fat and too lazy to protest against anything these days, and that goes for both Liberals and Conservatives.

  • Soda companies put High Fructose Corn Syrup in soft drinks because it is subsidized by the government. Fructose is the KIND OF sugar that creates viceral fat and makes you gain weight also. Not only does it wreck your liver, it also makes you consume more food, itself included, and it is addictive. If they want to ban anything, they should ban the addition to soft drinks, and all foods really, of High Fructose Corn Syrup. The "obesity epidemic" got going when they decided to subsidize More..

  • Doesn't the mayor of Cambridge have more pressing matters to tend to?

  • This is just how it works. As society moves to the left, people think they're more and more entitled to rule over others. To take what isn't theirs, to do whatever they want, and to make your choices for you.

In Sweden right now they're trying to ban urinals in bathrooms. Because it's wrong to separate the genders. They want to force men to sit to pee.

  • There won't be a ban becaue the Gov. will lose too much tax revenue. Look at cigarets.

  • You cant have a soda larger than 16oz in NY, but you can buy a sundae with bacon all over it from burger king. LOL This is like saying that It's Hooters fault, I like big tits. It's not the fat fuckers fault, its the soda company, that forces it down their throats.

  • Ahh not only is the government in your pockets, your bedroom, your media, your cars, every aspect of your life and now they are banning large sodas.

All in the name of fighting obesity; LOL it isn’t about obesity it is about getting more money. The stores sell smaller sodas at the same price, and if you are really thirsty you have to go buy a second one. The government gets taxes on BOTH purchases.

If they were really concerned about your health they would ban video games and force the k More..
