Montgomery County Police are investigating a theft of a rifle and police equipment stolen from an unmarked police vehicle.
Stolen from the vehicle were a Colt M-4 Rifle, two loaded M-4 magazines, two sets of handcuffs, two Montgomery County Police badges, an ASP baton, and two loaded .40 caliber Glock magazines.
The theft happened outside the officer’s home in Brookville overnight Monday, sometime after 9 p.m.
“The concern is we need to get that equipment back, certainly if the rifle is now in the hands of someone that’s not supposed to [have it],” said Melanie Brenner of Montgomery County Police. “It’s unfortunate it happened. Everyone makes mistakes.”
Police say this was clearly against policy for officers to leave weapons and ammunition in their vehicles.
“It’s not policy or our practice of our officers to leave that equipment or weapons in their vehicle overnight. It is asked of our officers to take that equipment into the home each night after their shift,” said Brenner.
All the equipment have serial numbers that easily traced to the police department. Police will monitor all crimes including shooting and police impersonations to try and track the equipment down. Detectives will also monitor pawn shops and online websites like eBay.
