Guilty verdict read Man Takes suicide pills

A horrified court room looked on today as a man who had just been convicted of
burning down his $3.5 million mansion collapsed and died in front of
them.Michael Marin, 53, was found guilty of arson by a jury in Maricopa County
Superior Court. He appeared shocked and closed his eyes as the verdict was read
before appearing to put something in his mouth and wash it down with liquid in a
plastic water bottle. Marin burned down his Phoenix mansion on July 5, 2009
after it failed to sell at a charity auction. No one was injured in the blaze
but the charge of committing arson of an occupied structure holds the same
number of years in prison in Arizona as second-degree murder.
If you look you’ll see this guy put something in his mouth at :35, then again
at 5:06, then he’s down for the count at 7:40. Wild stuff. Tried to get some
insurance money and got caught. It’s kind of grim for a Friday morning but you
gotta remember that this is what the dude chose for himself. James Bond cyanide
pills over getting finger-banged in his butt by huge Latino men.[/*][/list]

  • That was a stiff sentence, obviously he was depressed and desperate before he even got arrested, the trial probably cleaned him out of most of the money he had left, his wife would have left him, he would have been an old man getting out, he took the shortest route..end of problems. Besides, Arizona prisons are no cakewalk for a guy like him from what I hear.

He was a Wall St. type. He probably deserved to die in agony.

He wasn't just a Wall St. type, he was an ex Wall St. trader. However, the only person he endangered here was himself, according to the ABC news article.

I'm kinda split: glad he off'd himself and not so glad about the really stiff sentence.

A trader is exactly what a Wall St. type is in case you're confused.

  • same as second degree murder... I can understand if you start fires with the intent to hurt people, but ffs this guy just wanted insurance money. Seems like the punishment was way too harsh for this man to bear. RIP

Yeah, he looked in a lot of distress to me too.I don't think he counted on the length of time it took and the pills effects to steal his breath.Be curious to know what he took. Could have been cyanide as there was some foaming of the mouth, but a lot of drugs do that.Opiate based drugs and phenobarbital both will show in foaming of the mouth.Pheno for awhile was really popular with the suicide guys and gals.Don't know what they are using now past just taking everything in the me More..

Still an agonizing 2-3 minutes, dontcha think? The myth that OD'ing on drugs is quick and painless has not been my experience. Sleeping pills are pretty good, but you just go to sleep and the drugs do the rest...
Many of the OD'd and Suicide attempts I see are pretty nasty with the victim gasping for breath, convulsions, involuntary seizures and puking their guts out. Many simply choke on their own vomit.

very true.. but cyanide is a very potent chemical agent.. i can't tell you if their was pain involved since im No doctor LOL.. and who knows maybe he was suffering a painful death or just involuntary movements caused by the pill.. here's so widely known info

  • Burning down your house carries the same jail time as 2nd degree murder.

Anyone else see a disconnect? Wonder whos pushing these laws through?

    Insurance companies? Banks? You betcha.

    • @Bloomstomb There are too many lawyers and laws in US and many of them are unreasonably harsh, thus the highest incarceration rate in the whole world. Police state at its best. "The land of the free" lol...

    • @Bloomstomb He was tried for "arson of an occupied structure" on the theory that HE was still inside his house when he set it on fire. That may be how the law has been interpreted, but these prosecutors need to show a bit of fucking discretion and stop wasting the public's time and tax money on media stunts like this. It's not worth it.

  • Looks probable for cyanide, surprisingly. Possibly strychnine, but that is usually much slower acting and far more violent of a reaction.

When a proper lethal dose is taken (~200mg) unconciousness occurs within 15-30 seconds, and death (from cardiac arrest) in 30-45 minutes.

Cyanides (potassium cyanide, hydrogen cyanide, and sodium cyanide) kill by interrupting the transfer of signals through the neural causeways, causing death primarily by the heart stopping, but also arresting the diaphragm More..

Good info, thanks. I wonder how he got the pill: bought it or synthesized himself?

      Posted Jun-30-2012 By

    • @Celebrex

No idea. It wouldn't be expensive at all to buy, but i'm not sure who would sell that on the streets. He may have had some wierd connections?

You can synthesize it with effort and some chemistry knowhow at home from peach pits (takes about 2 dozen or so), but somehow I doubt he had the knowledge and equipment.

Perhaps he distilled it from some sort of pesticide or muiricidal poison? Cyanide is, unbeleivably, still commonly used to kill rodents. The more popular alternatives, ho More..

  • Despite anything else, it seems harsh that burning down your own house when there's no one in it get's the same amount of jail time as second degree murder. That's just weird.

  • So let me get this straight: Someone who burns down their own property that they have full rights to do what they want with it receives the same punishment as someone who willingly takes another person's life? What?!

Welcome to America. This is actually pretty common for a lot of offenses. Things like this, drug offenses, etc. are treated more harshly than murder.

  • tbh, i feel a bit sorry for the guy, this is hard times... and i hate that victimless money crimes are treated as harsh as violent crimes, clearly violent crimes are worse and punishment should be way harsher... Just kill murderers, rapists and violent psychopaths and save some money there.

    • @JudgeBooty no one was in the house (afaik) and no one got hurt, sure it must suck to have your house burned down, but im guessing he didn't just do it for fun, they would prolly have lost it anyway and he didn't see any other way out. *edit* guess someone was in the house, so i can only assume he took the proper percussions to avoid his family being in any danger, did he not and they only barely escaped im fine with the punishment, then it would clearly be fitting.

  • Kind of feel sorry for the guy. For those of you who haven't read on the case basically the guy had gotten in over his head. He had lost a lot money (had 50 in his bank account) and had payments on his house , plus another, as well as taxes that he owed and couldn't afford any of it.

They convicted him of setting fire to his house and HE (no one else) was the only one inside it. So basically they charged him for setting the house on fire and called it an "occupied structure" because h More..

: "Records show that other defendants found guilty of arson of an occupied structure, on top of other serious charges and when other people's lives were at risk, have received more lenient sentences than the one Marin faced.

For instance, a Phoenix man was sentenced to 10 years in prison and three years' probation after being convicted on charges that included arson of an occupied structure. Prosecutors said he endangered 12 people, including six children.

Franklin Zimring, a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who specializes in criminal sanctions, said a sentence up to 21 years in prison seemed overly long in Marin's case.

"What makes the potential sentence both seem quite long and seem, in some sense, inappropriate is that the life that was put at risk was that of the offender," he said."

Basically he was out of money, tried to burn his house down (while no one was in it but himself) and they railroaded him with high charges that carried a potential for 20+ years.

Still don't think he should have committed suicide but also don't think he was fairly charged. Should he have gotten arrest/in trouble? yes, but not for 20+ years of his life for burning down his own house with no one else there.

  • America is a fucking scary country. If he did no harm to other people theres no way 21 years is justified. How fucked in the head are you people?
