Some 1963>1972 apollo footage edited down, bits from all the missions, best viewed full screen. And a question at the end.
This is me paying homage to our American friends on the site. I know its a bit late in terms of anniversary's. But this is what I wanted to say ..
with all due respect.

apologies in advance for any spelling mistakes or timing issues. The footage is hard to find in good quality.
the new frontier awaits.

Or sit on our arse in Low Earth Orbit.

  • People like Ed White, Gus Grissom, and Gene Kranz were not just some of the finest Americans, but the finest people on the planet that ever lived. As I said on another post, I hope to visit the USA next year with my wife & 3 boys, and hope to visit the New York 9/11 memorial. Also on the agenda will be a visit to the space museum in Florida. I don't know if it's possible on the tour of the Kennedy Space Center to get out to the launch pad where Gus, Ed, and Roger Chaffee died, but if I do, I More..

    • @ccfc Hear hear! I also grew up with the Apollo program and that made me a science/astronomy/cosmology aficionado.
All in all, Apollo was one of the greatest achievements on mankind (and the US), ever.
And to think that some morons even contemplate that there must`ve been yet another conspiracy. Cretins...

  • Nice one, Owen! One of the amazing things to me is how they pulled all that off using the clunky primitive computers of the day. I remember one time I saw footage of an engineer at Mission Control making calculations using pencil, paper, and a sliderule.

    • @marinemom Agreed! As one who never liked maths, I`ve always wondered about trajectory calculations. Like sending satellites to direction X, where it will meet Saturn in 6 years.
I read somewhere about 10 years ago that the Volvo of that year had more computing power controlling the fuel injection than the computers on LEM.

    • @marinemom thats how they did it back in the day and still do to some degree.

      I've watched some amazing footage.

its hard to tell what would interest people having seen it

the computers werent' that fancy and calculations were just controlled using gyros, but the science hadn't been tested and nobody really knew if newton was right - would the ship just continue out to space or could they whip around the moon.

We learned so much, tested so much of what science had only dreamed to te More..

    • @Tuuri56 telemetry meant that they used computers based in ground control to do the calculations while requiring less on board computing.

like RC - amazing tracking stations were set up all over the world.

  • Excellent video, Owen.

My only criticism is that if you put 'A Tribute to Greatness' in the description, the video better be about me.

  • ---a fine tribute owen--my parents died when i was in my teens---i went to live with my uncle who worked for grumman aerospace ---he inspected the construction of all the LEMs before delivery to nasa---

  • Absolutely pathetic that the US wasted 1 trillion on bailouts and jobs programs - if they had given 10% of that to NASA, there'd be a zillion new jobs and I'd have been writing this post from mars.

  • Good shit visual work there.

Why did we need to learn how to build a space station that never does anything or goes anywhere?

What did we learn? It's hard, expensive, and the human body does not like sitting around in zero-g doing fuck all.

On the other hand, well done to NASA for simply surviving all this time against all the political odds.

Now, let's all stop playing that game eh?

    Let go somewhere, do something.

  • That was really a terrific tribute.

Last week I took my kids to the Space and Rocket Center in Alabama to catch the last week of a touring dinosaur exhibit. First we saw the giant Saturn Five, the Space Shuttle with external tank and boosters, and a bunch of other rockets parked outside. Then we saw the dinosaur fossils inside. It struck me that everything there was dinosaurs now.

I hope we aren't at the end of an age.
