Fact Check: Top 5 Liberal Excuses for Obama Losing the First Presidential Debate to Romney

Gov. Mitt Romney defeated President Barack Obama soundly in the first presidential debate in Denver, and even Obama’s supporters knew it. The media quickly went to work spinning excuses for their candidate, claiming that "the deck was stacked against Obama" from the start, and that Romney had not fought a fair fight.
Here are the five biggest--and worst--excuses for Obama's defeat:

5. We won’t know for 2-3 days whether Mitt Romney actually won. The idea here seems to be that the polls will tell us who won, although even CNN’s instant polling of those who had watched the debate had it at 67%-25% in Romney’s favor. This excuse has a purpose: to buy time for so-called “fact-checkers” to attack Romney’s arguments and change the narrative from “Romney won” to “Romney lied.” Speaking of which...

4. Romney lied with a straight face for ninety minutes. This excuse betrays the fact that so many on the left never leave their own media bubble. They believe what they tell each other about Romney and his policies, rather than listening or learning the truth. A good example was Rachel Maddow’s battle with Rudy Giuliani afterwards, in which she insisted Romney lied about a $5 trillion tax cut that he has never, in fact, proposed. Sad.

3. The free-flowing format was bad and let Romney dominate. On the contrary, the format allowed Obama to deploy his favorite defense, the filibuster. It just so happened that Romney didn’t let him get away with it, insisting on the right to reply to repeated distortions of his position. It is Obama’s fault, not the format’s, that he didn’t know when to stop talking, letting himself lose focus while the words kept coming out.

2. The moderator, Jim Lehrer, let Romney win. This is the Obama campaign’s official excuse, judging by the post-debate comments of Stephanie “Felon” Cutter, who argued that Lehrer allowed Romney to dominate. Actually, Lehrer was his usual liberal self, and was tougher on Romney than on Obama, interjecting more often with follow-up questions and letting the president use a full four minutes more than his challenger.

1. Obama didn’t show up tonight. This was the lament of Chris Matthews, who suggested--colorfully--that Obama had not tried hard enough to win the debate. The idea, once again--it is always the same when Obama suffers a setback--is that the president needs to fight harder, to be more aggressive. In fact, Obama was often too hostile. What needs to change are the ideas, not the tactics. And it’s too late for that.

  • The newest excuse is the altitude (ala Al Gore).

OK, let's say that the altitude is affecting Obama's judgement -- that means that he isn't allowed to carry the codes to the nuclear arsenal above 3000 ft? Does he know that if the prez is on Air Force 1, that the effective altitude is at 40,000ft flying altitude is approx 7,000 ft? So, in one statement, AlGore said that Obama is unable to carry out the judgements required to be the Commander in Chief.

Oh, and Obama gave his acceptance speech More..

  • Ya Romney fucking butchered Obama last night. Although the best part came in the post debate on the floor when I turned to CNN to see their point of view and saw them "lose the feed" on the Florida senator who asked some very pressings questions about obamas Medicare plan. Shit was classic. This also gets me pumped for the vp debate....Biden will get fucking obliterated.

    • @Ohyawellfuku Yea, it's gonna be like watching a sheepdog running around an old leg of butchered mutton.

Watch though, the media are already in high gear talking about what Obama should have said. Chris Matthews really betrayed himself last night, his post debate fit was pure joy to watch.

    • @Ohyawellfuku

Saw that as well...Rubio was sounding off when the screen went blank and Wolf Blitzer say's "oops we lost our feed and will try to get back".

    • @Ohyawellfuku Biden seems unpredictable to me which could be difficult to debate. I've never seen Ryan debate but I've seen him sidestep questions with no subtlety at all and without answering a yes or no question. Biden says some stupid shit though.

  • The liberals still don't get it. Barry is not qualified for the job he holds. Barry also felt that the debates were beneath him, after all he is the president, and he should not need to debate a Republican.

  • Later today The Young Turks will be out with their how wonderful Obama did BS.
I don't need 2 more debates to know Obama is Clueless and screwing up America.
Fire Obama and give Mitt 4 years if he can't fix it then fire him in 4 years. Send a message that is what they need.

  • The only debating that interests me is mas-debating.
I think Obama is the biggest masterbater out of the two.

  • 67% said Romney won the debate, CNN says no one has gotten over 60% since the 80's when the started the poll... I'm an... "Obama Boy" but even I can admit he was crushed... I think he can do better, but he didn't call bs on anything Romney said, and Romney called him out on that shipping jobs overseas thing, AND I EVEN BELIEVED MITT OVER OBAMA. I guess that's why there's 3 of them... Romney has got to win all 3 to see any change in the election in my opinion though.

    • @docyoung what can you call bs on what Romney said?

      Posted Oct-4-2012 By

    • @docyoung this went to show obamas clear lack of knowledge in economics 101. You shouldn't need 2 more debates to figure that out.

    • @Ohyawellfuku luckily for him most of his voters don't understand the economy(ie Me). But who really does understand the monster other than the ones who feed it?

    • @davidlamb12 Romney DOES have a 5 trillion tax cut as well, because he plans on a 20% marginal tax cut which would cost 5 trillion in tax revenue with NO way to pay for it PLUS promises of other funding with no way to pay for it other than, closing loop holes(WHICH ONES). He will have to, HAVE TO raise taxes on the middle class to cover these costs.

    • @docyoung You don't listen too well. Obama tried to say this 3 times as well and was refuted every time. Just because you repeat something doesn't make it true. You must be an Obama child.

Step 1 -- keep the current tax rates (don't allow them to GO UP) -- this is Obama's definition of a tax cut.

Step 2 -- decrease corporate tax which will GREATLY increase the number of jobs in the US, thereby creating wealth and greatly increasing tax revenue. It happened in the '80s and will happen again More..

  • It was amazing watching Chris Matthews destroy his credibility having a meltdown over Obama's performance. I listened to some talk radio this morning to see what they were saying and there was a lot of focus on the debate but not nearly enough gloating over all these leftie pricks bemoaning the fact that their boy failed last night.

    • @0megaman I've heard that a lot since the debate but it's nonsense. He won the Dem nomination against Hillary and he won the election against McCain. He's had 4 years of people kissing his ass and he paid the price. He was absoultely useless in the debate but by far the most amusing thing about the whole situation is the convulsions of the media today apopleptic that their man lost. They're all talking about what he should have said it's like Michael Moore's tweets only they're coming from many More..
