Israeli engineer creates cardboard bicycle

Izhar Gafni, the creator of the bike, took it upon himself as a personal project to create this because of his love for biking. After consulting with many engineers who told him it wouldn't work he went ahead and created it anyway.
The cost is approximately $9-12 each, with a retail price shooting for $60-90 depending on the configuration

  • It's not actually a cardboard bicycle. It's a cardboard based composite frame with a raft of 'hard' parts inserted - e.g. the wheel bearings.

He's using honeycomb cardboard - exactly the same principle as aluminium honeycomb sheeting used in aircraft. They both have well defined engineering characteristics, but weight for weight the aluminium is way-way stronger.

  • Unfortunately for him, one can buy a steel bike (made in China, of course) for about $90 or less.

  • "Suddenly it struck my mind, why not make a bicycle out of cardboard!"

Hmm yeah I can think of quite a few good reasons. Interesting idea but I sure won't be rushing out to buy one.

  • I find the engineer more interesting than the project. You can tell he is someone who thinks deeply and works hard on making the impossible possible. Someone who doesn't waste his time on the Internet... whoops.

  • I'd like to see someone hit a jump on one of those. This reminds me of those videos by tacome1942 on youtube, he makes working replicas of guns out of only paper down to the smallest detail, complete with paper and or wood bullets that actually fire from the guns.
