Two Legionnaires belonging to the 2nd Legion Parachute Regiment Etranger (REP) based in Calvi (Corsica) were fatally injured during the morning of August 7, during a reconnaissance and search weapons and explosive devices in the valley of Tagab.
This mission, conducted alongside Afghan security forces, has mobilized the Joint Battle Group (IAWG) Fifteen-Two, which was reinforced by a company of the 2nd REP in the month of June.
It was when they left an area that had been excavated that French soldiers were attacked by insurgent elements, to the village of Nawrozkhel. French helicopters (Gazelle and Tiger) and American (Kiowa) immediately stepped in to provide support to troops hung and neutralize the attackers. Many of them were killed and wounded, but the General Staff of Armed in Paris does not give the number.
Nevertheless, the results on the French side is 2 legionnaires killed and five wounded. These were first evacuated by armored vehicles and then transported by helicopter to the military hospital in Kabul.
After those of Rodolphe Penon Sergeant, Corporal and Sergeant Robert Hutnik head Konrad Rygiel, these deaths bring to five the number of legionaries of the 2nd REP fallen in Afghanistan. Since 2001, 72 French soldiers lost their lives in Afghanistan.
