X1.7 Flare Produced By Our Sun: First X-Flare Of 2012!!

Major Solar Flare/ S2 Radiation Storm

Sunspot 1402 located on the northwest limb, just produced a major X1.7
Solar Flare at 18:37 UTC. An R3 Level Radio Blackout resulted ,which
led to the fading of HF signals on the sunlit side of Earth. Signals
have since recovered. The proton levels are on the rise again and the moderate S2 radiation storm threshold has been reached.

  • Quick! We need a new bill with more regulations and higher taxes to stop solar flares!

The only figure that's really meaningful for creating Auroras and affecting transmission lines is the bottom graph Estimated Kp

It stayed in the Green the whole time so no major drama

    • @DEADBEEF I didn't know that the only thing we looked at were Auroras and power grids. It's a scientific event no matter what the effect is here on Earth. Yes the Kp-index did stay below 3, or "green zone", if you'd like. But that is here on Earth, with the radiation storm created, I would imagine our astronauts are once again hanging out in their pods. Not to mention it did create a HF blackout for nearly an hour... You're only looking at the geomagnetic storm aspect to the flare.

  • Ok, lemme guess here.
global warming is causing the sun to spit out
    massive flares....

  • Here's an animated gif of the huge solar wave from the flare. Lucky it's not headed toward us.

  • nuh uh this is science, its full of holes and assumptions, they dont know what really is going on out there...are they actually there? then its not science its just guesses. The bible says 'let there be light' it doesnt say 'let there Coronal Mass Ejections with destructive potential'

    • @deznutts does the bible also say "let there be enough uv and x-ray radiation possibly effect the inosphere of the earth"? (in short, x-ray shots are free while i'm getting a tan^^)
