Exactly.
That kid is probably today the proud father of teenagers that have real weapons, not just toys.
And then he might be the first surprised when the rampage happens.
Ridiculous. The kid wanted a toy gun so he
could be like Dick Tracey...a COP. Kids play
with all kinds of toys. Crashing toy cars
together doesn't make them a dangerous drivers
when they grow up. Playing with stuffed animals
doesn't mean they'll have 3 dogs and become a
veteranarian...and playing with toy guns so
you can play cops or soldiers doesn't mean anything about what he will become, or whether he or his kids will have guns. He was playing Dick Tracey...does that mean all of his teenagers are in training are attending the police academy? Think...then speak. It does WONDERS. Considering that TV commercial is
over 50 years old, I doubt the kid has has any teenagers at all...since he would be in his 60's now.

You are right concerning the age of this kid, he is more likely to be a grandfather by today... The trouble is rather with his grandchildren.
It is also true that wanting to be cowboys and pistol-waving detectives were the dreams that these kids, now grandfathers, had in the 50s, and not so later.
When came the 60s and the 70s, these kids dreams changed dramatically in nature: Dick Tracey's dream weapons were replaced by Johnny Seven's One Man Army and its grenade launchers, anti-tank weapons, anti-bunker missiles and armor-piercing shells.
