Plane Catches Fire at Japan Naha-Airport

August 19, 2007 - A plane belonging to Taiwan's China Airlines caught fire at Naha airport(OKA) on Japan's southern island of Okinawa on Monday, and there were conflicting reports about whether some people might still be on board.

Some reports suggested all passengers and crew had made it off the airliner, but one report suggested four people might still be trapped on board, a Naha city fire official said.

The Boeing 737 passenger plane had flown from Taipei to Naha, Okinawa's capital, with 155 passengers on board, public broadcaster said. An engine caught fire three minutes after the plane landed, broadcaster said.

TV pictures showed black smoke billowing from the plane as airport fire crews smothered it in foam.

  • Wow and I just received a call from my mom. My uncle is one of the crew on that plane, but he and the rest of the crew along with all passengers are ok. I heard that they discovered something was wrong when they almost reach the airport and when the plane landed everyone were already more than ready to get out. Nobody was hurt my uncle said. He was on the plane.

  • Lucky for the passengers the plane was already on the ground or else the outcome would be much worse.

  • Ed Hewer: "Excellent quality upload. Thanks heaps.

Firefighters attacked the wrong side at first. The wind wasn't strong enough to warrant upwind attack. Not in those vehicles anyway.
    "
I think you will find it was almost a textbook deployment from the fire crews initially; they were upwind. The only fault was it took too long for the other pumps to deploy & branchmen were slow to get to work. The pilot parked with the engine fire downwind to take the flames from the fuselage, More..
