Adolf Hitler's nephew pleaded to enlist in the US army and fight against his uncle's Nazi regime, a letter written in 1942 reveals.

The New York Daily News on Thursday reported that William Patrick Hitler, who fled from Germany to the US in 1939, wrote US President Franklin D. Roosevelt after being rejected from the US Army, begging him to fight alongside the Allied Forces.

"I am the nephew and only descendant of the ill-famed Chancellor and Leader of Germany who today so despotically seeks to enslave the free and Christian peoples of the globe," William Patrick Hitler wrote in the letter.

"More than anything else I would like to see active combat as soon as possible and thereby be accepted by my friends and comrades as one of them in this great struggle for liberty," he noted.

According to the report, the letter finally reached then FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who allowed Hitler to join the Navy in 1944.

After three years of service, William Patrick was discharged due to injury. He later changed his last name to Stuart-Houston, married and settled in Long Island.

William Patrick died in 1987 at the age of 76.

  • Seems a bit strange to think that I would have thanked Hitler for his service, but the man certainly did his bit.
He was a scouser too. Lived at the end of upper parliament street.

  • In 1933, William Patrick Hitler returned to Nazi Germany in an attempt to benefit from his uncle's rise to power. His uncle found him a job in a bank. Later, William worked at an Opel automobile factory, and later still as a car salesman. Dissatisfied with these jobs, William persisted in asking his uncle for a better job, writing to him with blackmail threats that he would sell embarrassing stories about the family to the newspapers.
