Obama's Promised "Green Jobs"? - Some are already moving to China

Solar Panel Maker Moves Work to China

BEIJING — Aided by at least $43 million in assistance from the government of Massachusetts and an innovative solar energytechnology, Evergreen Solar emerged in the last three years as the third-largest maker of solar panels in the United States.

But now the company is closing its main American factory, laying off the 800 workers by the end of March and shifting production to a joint venture with a Chinese company in central China. Evergreen cited the much higher government support available in China.

The factory closing in Devens, Mass., which Evergreen announced earlier this week, has set off political recriminations and finger-pointing in Massachusetts.

And it comes just as President Hu Jintao of China is scheduled for a state visit next week to Washington, where the agenda is likely to include tensions between the United States and

  • Just more of obama's empty rhetoric.

    • Right. Because before Obama no one else shipped jobs overseas. Before Obama the oil industry did everything it could to help america use less of it's product. before spouting off about rhetoric, get a clue. Obama may not have brought any of the change (or anything else) that he promised to the white house... but blaming him for shit like this is like blaming a child for the death of Jesus.

    • The part you are incorrect on is obama SAID he was going to do it,the others did not run around campaigning saying they were going to do something. obama never had any intention of doing it. He was lying then and he continues to lie.

  • It's well known China has a problems lending millions to corporations that give little in return from their state owned banks. This company can't compete with many other solar panel manufacturers in U.S. or in China that offer better panels for less money. They had a method of manufacturing solar panels with less silicon to produce their panels when the price of silicon was high,The price later dropped giving them no advantage in the market. That Along with a poor investment strategy should have pe More..

  • Ah yes, its Obama's fault that Congress is unwilling to revoke tax incentives for business that move out of country. The republicans bear no responsibility for this; it's not like they have been obstructing every piece of legislation presented by the President.

Even the article presented blames China's violations of business practices and the companies inability to produce.

  • If obama was able to tax companies who are using overseas employees more and local employees less then it would make a difference. At the moment companies are happy employing people at 1/10th the cost per day. Obama tried to implement the tax but the republicans and foxnews got people convinced it was communism. End result? in 2010 US companies make record profits in a time where the majority of Americans are struggling, i guess its ok because the republicans got what they want.. Less jobs and m More..

  • patriotic thing would be to buy american

smart thing would be to buy chinese

face it, US products are overpriced for what they deliver. chinese products may not be as good but for a fraction of the cost of their US counterparts, they are exceedingly better in value.

not to mention living costs in china are absolutely miniscule, you may earn $35k a year but much of it will be swilled away in taxes, bills, insurance, college funds and overpriced everyday products leaving you with little dispo More..

    • Totally true. A good solar system for the average home is about $25k and cost benefits are not realized for 5-10 years. Most Chinese products I have used only last 1-3 years.

Making this product in China guarantees that I would never consider them. I am looking to install a wind generator on my home when I get back from my deployment. Made in Kentucky.

  • Here is a little experiment for all of you. I live in Phoenix, AZ and here everyone screaming about how the Mexicans are taking our jobs. After a particularly well liquored up debate about it I challenged my buddy to a walk through of his home to see where the items he has were made. Guess what, about 1% was Mexico, maybe another 5% were USA (and I bet that is better than most), another 10% was Japan, and the rest was China. They have the power and money because WE gave it to them. The politic More..

    • I'm guessing that your household doesn't have ANYTHING made in China. Or does it????

Also, apart from all the Chinese money borrowing the US has been dining on; China holds 23% of the US treasury bonds.
One cannot live without the other.

The last G20 conference had much more weight than the G8 because the economic power is shifting.

Since you feel so indifferent about China, you should perhaps make a bonfire and burn everything you have that's made there, then stop going to WalMart... More..
