I adapted an rc buggy for use in our small garden,I find normal speedy rc cars too fast for the garden and and too prone to damage, though I have twisted a half shaft with this setup, that is the only damage so far.
Its a Tamiya DF-02 1/10 scale 4x4 buggy, I made the front shock mounts higher and further out and added 1/8 scale 100mm shocks front and rear, this allows fully unrestricted movement of the wishbones/halfshafts (around 2" of travel front and rear). I also fitted a reduction gearbox to give it super low speed torque. Add some monster tyres and that's pretty much it apart from a high torque steering servo (its still not enough for these tyres!) the body is made from some old shelf, its meant to be a Citroen 2CV type thing.
Battery life is around an hour or more for a 7.2v 2000ma/h battery (moderate use)
I put some thick red gasket sealant in the rear diff case to make it a bit less open, this really helps over lumpy obstacles and loose surfaces.
