  • They combined an autogyro with a coaxial rotor helicoper... Cool.

I guess the rigidity of the rotors is allowed by the coax and the speed is allowed by lift from the wing and additional thrust from the propeller after the rotors reach their maximum pitch... Still wont go a whole lot faster than regular choppers, but if it is also more agile and has more acceleration(without more fuel consumption) then hell, it's a good replacement for a number of current helicopters.

  • What the hell, they cut out of the race so soon.

  • Very cool Helo but its just a Prototype and the project is stoped as much as i know.
Now they go for the military Version of this, the Sikorsky S-97 Raider.

  • Cool! Does it do Mach 1?

  • Cool. Only 25 knots slower than the Osprey V-22.

  • I haven't seen this, thanks and Cheers!

250 Knots? That doesn't seem very fast, how fast is an Apache *depends on how far away the whisky bottle is* attach chopper?
Rotor tips breaking the sound barrier is what I thought slowed them down..a solid wing or stationary at speed with variable pitch..ramble ramble ramble....

    • @mytwocents I think the fastest helicopter was the Westland lynx at around 250 mph .itbwas a stripped out version I believe

      My google search gives this

Same chopper from the vid LOL!

Check out the presentation! The guy is confident if not cocky..

PS: I liked 3 kings, not so much the italian job....
      Cheers!

    • @mytwocents The main problem with going too fast in helicopters is as the blades turn the side turning away from the direction the helicopter is going is actually moving slower in relation to the air around it as the helicopter speeds up. This is fixed by adjusting it's pitch, but at a certain speed you cannot safely adjust without too much drag on that side. This has more solid rotor blades and since they are coaxial the lift evens out, the propeller in the rear will continue propelling the cra More..

I don't know enough about aerodynamics to be sure; does a helicopter go seriously unstable when the tips go supersonic? Or can it do so to some degree and get away with it?

Assuming Mach 1 tip speed is a solid barrier, still in theory a helicopter could fly at just under Mach .5 if the rotor tips' rotational velocity is also just under Mach .5.

At sea level normal conditions, that places the theoretical maximum speed at around 370~380mph.

  • Beats the old record by Westland lynx at 249 mph I think .it was a stripped out version I believe in the 1980 s

  • It looks like they took the `1967 Lockheed Cheyenne to the next (2008) level.

  • Interesting tail rotar but they have counter-rotating blades so they can get away with it. Notar's are still the best if you can afford one. Hopefully another drug lord will get busted so that I can trade up. Until then, mine is more than adequate.

  • I see there is a bit left to do in the flight computer department, but it's impressive and it will be fun to see when it's finished.
