Elevators cannot plummed down a shaft. The have a brake systen. Unless the brakes system malfunctions it's highly unlikely an elevator plummeds down. This one had a malfunction when going up. Brakes on the counterweight was the culprit here.

What was wrong with the description? They almost did get crushed, or cut in half is more like it. Didn't you see how close the were when they got off to getting chopped in half as the elevator went up past the floor?
