Canada's Ice Road Truckers - Trucking across frozen lakes

I saw this on the net this morning and it kinda shook me up. You see I went to Yellowknife with my ROV system in January 2005 to Lake Prosperous and recovered the body of a trucker that went through the ice in his truck to 266ft deep.

The casualty I recovered was 23 year old Gary Robinson, son of Marvin Robinson the CEO of Robinson Enterprises & Arctic Sunwest airlines. On this video Marvin says "It is not a question of if you fall in but when you fall in" how sadly prophetic that became.

It was minus 53 degrees & my UK made Seaeye Falcon ROV system had never been tested to these temperatures, I worried bits may snap or crack off or the umbilical cable would crack. Neither happened, thank Christ. Talk about culture shock, coming from Dubai emigrating to Canada the lowest temps I had previously seen were - 4 or 5 degree...uggghhh. First thing I noticed is all your nose hair feezes, it was like what the fek is that!

The trcukers & locals told me if the ice is making cracking noises that is a good thing as it is 'working' if it rumbles..get the hell outta there. The trucks weight depresses the ice pushing any air pockets ahead & creating a kinda bow wave, if you reach that wave you will go through the ice so you must not exceed around 30kmphish and when reching shore you must slow to a crawl until the bow wave has dissipated before going onland. These dudes have big cajones eh?

I also went to Fort St James after this job to look for 2 teenagers - Mathew & Kora who went through the ice of Lake Stuart Chrstmas Day night 2004. Afetr these 2 jobs it took me 2 weeks of serious drinking & soul searching to start recovering. Ended up at a shrinks on ativan by Feb 2005. Fully recovered now..ish!
