  • In the early 60's my parents and I, they were both private pilots, were taking off from an airport in the Ca central valley. The tower said to hold for U-2. We were at the end of the runway waiting to take off. The plane pulled out mid runway, powered up and was off the ground in a few hundred feet. Went to a 45 degree climb for a short while then went almost vertical. This was cold war stuff and probably a CIA flight. Quite amazing.

  • I've never understood the single wheel thing on this thing. How's it supposed to stop and not tip over?

    • @Saros

      Usually the Thunderbirds are on scene. They provide the 8 rubber tyred dollies for under the wings.

    • @Saros the U-2 uses a bicycle configuration with a forward set of main wheels located just behind the cockpit, and a rear set of main wheels located behind the engine. The rear wheels are coupled to the rudder to provide steering during taxiing. To maintain balance while taxiing, two auxiliary wheels, called "pogos" are added for takeoff. These fit into sockets underneath each wing at about mid-span, and fall off during takeoff. To protect the wings during landing, each wingtip has a More..

    • @plymouthrock Is that basically to minimize weight?

    • @plymouthrock Thanks for the info this thing is amazing, same is your info. but y not adding more wheels like other jets I know this is a dumb question!

  • The U2 has a ceiling height of 70,000 feet (21,000 m)at a speed of 475mph I think. That jets pretty bad ass but I wanna see the SR-71 Blackbird. Ceiling height of 85,000 feet top speed 2,200mph or mach 3.5. Great video. Awesome

    • @STIWRC111 I saw a video of an SR-71 that said Russians launched a new missle we didnt know of that they saw go up past them! He wouldn't say how fast but he said way past it's structural ratings! Prob mach 4.5. They never have said its true potential.

  • Next best thing to a trip into space, would love to take a seat with these guys. Worth saying also that that the cruising altitude of Concorde was around 60,000 which is fairly close to this aircraft's max, a measure of the technical genius of the 1960's British and French designers for that legend of a passenger aircraft.

  • Whoever invented direct access on those movie-players is a genius.

    Since I'm in a good mood today, here are the highlights :

    00:00 - 01:20 .. car chasing bird on takeoff
    01:20 - 09:40 .. same stuff -> avoid
    09:40 - 12:20 .. climb --> always same view --> might want to have a look, else, avoid
    12:20 - 19:15 .. cruise --> interesting the first 2 minutes, then becomes repetitive
    19:15 - 20:15 .. take off roll
    20:15 - end .. landing

    at 15:17 you can see F. Baumgartner jumping from his More..
